Ophrys brachyotus (Orchidaceae): historique, présence cartographique, taxinomie et littérature

Following the discovery of Ophrys brachyotus in Provence, details and a review of knowledge about it are provided. First of all, the circumstances of its initial discovery in Liguria and those of its description are studied. Subsequently, little interest was paid to it by botanists for nearly one hundred and fifty years. Later on, it aroused renewed attention by the end of the last century from authors overlooking the writings of the 19th century and consequently the taxa described, or not, considered as synonyms. Finally, research in the literature reporting its presence, analyses of specimens in European herbaria and field research both in Italy and Istria and in France are reviewed.
