Abstract

The Valencian humanist Juan Luis Vives embodies the model of the European Christian humanist like few others do. For this reason, his competence in Latin and, in his case, also in Greek is evident. However, one of his singularities was his defence of mother tongues and, in general, of the different vernaculars. In his works, we have sufficient testimonials of his proficiency in reading different European languages. The subsequent questions are about which of these languages he spoke and whether he had used any of them as a writer. This paper shows that, in addition to Latin, the language almost exclusively employed by humanists, he also made use of his two mother tongues, Valencian and Castilian or Spanish, in some circumstances. This research explains what those circumstances were, and it aims at completing the vision commonly offered concerning a scholar celebrated for the depth of his Latin work, but who was also praised due to the content of some texts in the vernacular.
