Sociología en las aulas. Informe sobre la situación de la sociología en la enseñanza no universitaria

The teaching of Sociology was mandatory within the Spanish education system until the 2015-16 academic year, when it was eliminated as a subject in the Social Sciences itinerary. In Spain, today it is only present in Catalonia, where it is discreetly kept as an optional subject in secondary education, in combination with an interesting crosscurricular approach through projects that help both to introduce its contents and to apply its lens to current social problems. The recently approved LOMLOE (Organic Law of Education 3/2020, of 29 December, which modifies Organic Law 2/2006, of 3 May) opens a window of opportunity for Sociology to be imparted again because it allows 40% of the teaching content to be decided by each regional educational authority and 10% by the educational centre. There are many reasons that justify the teaching of Sociology at pre-tertiary level. Sociology is undoubtedly an increasingly relevant science for interpreting social realities and for maturing in them as active citizens, which explains our urge to reclaim its presence on the educational arena.
