The present work analyzes the expression en lo que cabe, construction in process of fixation as discursive operator that shows certain complexity in its construction and macrosyntactic behavior. It satisfies some requirements of the so-called discursive operators, but coexists with free construction. Its value is to limit an assessment and reduce the argumentative force of its scope. This procedural meaning evolves from the original semantic content and the functions it fulfils in the discours

    (2019) Fant, Lars M.
The last two decades have seen an increasing interest in what characterizes the left and right sentence peripheries. This paper is the partial account of a research project at Stockholm University which aims at comparing highly proficient Swedish users of L2 French and Spanish with native speakers with regard to how they structure the syntactic peripheries in natural colloquial speech. In the present context, however, only Spanish and Swedish will be accounted for. The analysis contains two aspects: on the one hand, a typological study comparing native speakers of the two languages and, on the other hand, a study addressing the question of the upper limits of L2 acquisition while comparing Spanish L1 and L2 speakers, the latter having Swedish as their L1.Results addressing the first aspect show that native speakers of Spanish put more weight on the left periphery than do native speakers of Swedish, who, in turn, put considerably more weight on the right periphery, thus showing a clear typological difference. As regards the second, acquisitional aspect, the behaviour of the high-proficient L2 speakers closely resembles that of the native speakers, with only a few albeit interesting exceptions. On the other hand, no clear instances of L1 transfer can be observed in the Spanish L2 productions.

Vague language is characterized by its polarity, which ranges from a ?positive? function connected with politeness, spontaneity and expressive fluency (especially in conversation) to a ?perverse? one, aimed at masking specific data or circumstances that should be mitigated or hidden. This paper deals with these two functions, albeit with special focus on the latter, a negative procedure out of the many manipulation strategies that can be deployed using linguistic devices. The result of this function will be exemplified in the light of evidence from the field of political discourse.

This is a summary of the doctoral thesis on Spanish Studies, at the University of Salamanca, entitled ?Politeness does not detract from bravery?, a research on the expression of courtesy in Salamanca and Quito. The aforementioned thesis seeks to identify and analyze the use of positive and negative courtesy when making requests in each city. Differences, based on gender, level of education, age and origin, are also analyzed within each group. To collect information, surveys were conducted with 393 students in two universities of the forenamed cities: 187 students of USAL (University of Salamanca) and 206 students of PUCE (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador). Surveys include everyday situations that occur at different levels of trust: high trust (family environment or close friends), low trust (friends of friends or relatives) and no trust (in a warehouse, an office or a taxi). Each respondent had to choose between a direct strategy and an indirect strategy in a given situation. The study is expected to show substantial differences, not only because of the dialectal variety: Andean Spanish and European Spanish, but also because of social distance, level of education, gender and origin, foreign students have been included.

Numeral constructions in spoken italian and spanish : From quantitative approximation to interpersonal relationships
    (2019) Voghera, Miriam
Two general considerations can derived from all the considered data. Firstly, it is possible to trace a continuum of NuCxs based on their degree of cohesion, fixedness, specificity and idiomaticity, which correlates with the kind of approximate or vague meaning and function. The more the NuCxs become idiomatic the less they express quantity. In many cases, the constructions acquire a pragmatic value and codify a manner of express the degree of commitment, the attitude of the speakers and the kind of relationship s/he would like to enter into with the addressee. In these cases, the various levels of vagueness are often thickly intertwined and not easily untangled. Secondly, the approximate numeral constructions with small numerals seem more specified and fixed compared with those with large ones. Probably this is due to their frequency, since we know that small numerals are much more used than large numerals (Mehler&Dehaene 1992). Although it is necessary to do further research on this specific point, these results seem to be another element confirming that the means to be vague are more numerous than those that convey the opposite functions (Caffi 2007).

    El principio de spallanzani
    (2019) Ridruejo Alonso, Emilio
The Italian Lazzaro Spallanzani (1729 - 1799) is well known as the scientist who dismantled theories of spontaneous generation. But Spallanzani was also a pioneer in the study of the regeneration of living beings. In 1768 he published the Prodromo, a work on animal reproduction, in which he was also interested in regeneration. Spallanzani described several types of regeneration, that of the frog's tail and the tips of the salamander. Before, in a letter addressed in 1766 to the Swiss biologist Charles Bonnet, he had also described the regeneration of the earthworm, the slug or the snail.

The ?enlightened? Aragonese Don José Nicolás de Azara spent much of his life in Italy (1765-1797), where he carried out important diplomatic tasks, as revealed by the reading of his rich Epistolario that, in the course of those activities, has reached posterity. The letters written with this purpose ?as he warned himself? can contain, beyond the «official» formalities, more spontaneous expressive features if appropriate conditions are met. From this last point of view, the main goal of this paper is to analyse a representative sample of Italian influences that, in these «appropriate conditions», emerge in his correspondence.

The novel La colmena and the film La colmena are two narrative genres the textualization processes of which are built with different materials, even though they refer back to the same story. In the film, the cinema plot operates narratively and descriptively through the sequencing of images in which dialogues, action, spaces and characters coexist: there is a certain specification given in a multimodal form. In the novel, everything is verbal, discursive: its textualization is a succession of linguistic forms with evocative power. The common bond that they share, apart from the narrated story, are characters? dialogues. Between the source product and the target product lies the mediating function of the cinema script written by J. L. Dibildos, which consists in adapting C. J. Cela?s work from literature to cinema with transformations in its literary structure and in its dialogues to turn La colmena into a film text. In this work, dialogues of La colmena of the three creative proposals are analyzed and compared, with two objectives: (1) to determine if linguistic modifications are imposed by scenography of the sequences and (2) to verify whether the constructivist technique developed by Cela to make literary dialogues truthful serves as a reference to create new dialogical sequences and interactions between characters invented in the script.

This paper describes the protocol used to build the Ameresco corpus (America Colloquial Spanish). Collecting a corpus containing more than one dialect poses a series of challenges. On the one hand, managing a large number of external teams requires that the methodology used is sound. On the other hand, the methodology should be in line with the goals that the project aims to reach and with essential corpus design features such as issues when recording, the transcription and labelling system and the anonymisation of sensitive data. All these aspects should be thoughtfully chosen so that the quality standards set by the scientific community are reached.

In this paper, we sought to focus on the interaction between speaker and listener, and especially the moments in which the general rule of conversation occurs, "speak one at a time." The focus of this work was the phenomenon of voice overlap and, as has been clarified, there was no concern in defining and analyzing overlap from the point of view of shift management strategies, ie whether there was interruption or assault on the shift. but only a few reasons that lead the speaker to override the speech of the speaker.

Secuencias de conectores en el corpus VAL. ES. CO.
    (2019) Cuenca Ordiñana, Maria Josep
In this paper, I analyze sequences of connectives in Spanish informal conversations from the Val.Es.Co corpus. Following the proposal presented in Cuenca y Marín (2009) and revisited and applied to English in Cuenca y Crible (2019), three degrees of integration of two or more consecutive connectives are proposed, namely, juxtaposition, addition and composition. The analysis allows us to describe and exemplify each type of sequence, identify the specific tokens found in the corpus of analysis and account for the case of compound connectives in more detail.
