- Aportacions a la història del lèxic nord-occidental(1999) Farreny Sistac, M. DolorsThe author presents the tentative results of a lexical research carried out on a collection of seven criminal prosecutions between 1482 and 1598 preserved in the Arxiu Municipal de la Pacria in Lleida. A fraction of the 33 gleaned words was still unattested in basic lexicographical compilations; in other cases an earlier date for the word has been obtained or information has been implemented with the north-western witness.
- Per a la data de l'apitxat(1999) Colón Domènech, GermàThis essay's contribution consists of new 15th and 16th century documentary witnesses, ateested by scholars, which show readings with ch spelling instead of other spellings representing the voiced palato-alveolar affricate. The author maintains that these cases, although exceptional in contemporary texts, constitute «crevices in the old edifice of written language» and would confirm the hypothesis that apitxament, the voiceless production of the above-mentioned sound, originated in 15th century Valencia, as opposed to those dating this phenomenon well into the modern period.
- Lèxic de l'administració i del mon rural en documentació municipal de Fraga (s.XVI.)(1999) Fort Cañellas, María RosaA study of legal-administrative and agricultural vocabulary of the minutes book of the town of Fraga between 1477 and 1505. Although this is a formal compilation, it shows many characteristics of real language in a region which constitutes a linguistic boundary. Thus, together with repetitive bureaucratic expressions, there are numerous terms of legal or rural vocabulary, coincidental with or akin to north-western Catalan and Valencian, which have eventually become part of the general language.
- Substrat i superstrat en l'evolució del català(1999) Morán i Ocerinjauregui, JosepReflections on the significance of substratum and superstratum in the genesis and evolution of Catalan. The author considers how the recourse to the pre-Roman susbtratum in the etymological interpretation or in the historical and critical grammar has been carried to excess both by those absolutely against it and by those who take it as an all-explaining panacea. He also points out that, conversely to the interest in substratum, the Germanic superstratum has not received the attention it deserves in the genesis of Catalan because of various prejudices, some of them of an ideological kind.
- Problemes de la història social de la llengua dels segles XIX i XX(1999) Ginebra, JordiReflections on the conditions, contents and methodology of the social history of Catalan, reflections which deal with the 19th and 20th centuries, but go beyond these periods. From a perspective close to that of the sociology of knowledge, the author points out the limitations that threaten the status of this discipline. He points out some problems both in method and exegesis, such as access to data, reliability of these data, interdisciplinary collaboration, the conceptual scope of linguistic change, the distinction between facts and interpretations, and periodization.
