    An Erotic Jousting Poem by Antonio de Velasco and Fadrique Enríquez: Àngela de Santàngel, her Suitors, and her Presence in the Carajicomedia

    I discuss an exchange of verses between Antonio de Velasco and his cousin Fadrique Enríquez, Admiral of Castile, published in the 1514 edition of the Cancionero general, concerning an erotic joust between a court lady and her six suitors who did not turn up to participate in the joust. This poem has already been analysed by Ian Macpherson, but I take his analysis further and identify the lady and her sixth suitor and offer a more exact timeframe for its composition. I also identify this lady as one of the court ladies satirised as a prostitute in the anonymous and highly obscene Carajicomedia and discuss her Jewish converso relatives.

    El directori inquisitorial de Pere d'Albalat i Ramon de Penyafort: estudi, edició i traducció

    The short text Consultationes per dominum Petrum, archiepiscopum Terrachonensem, de consilio peritorum circa modum procedendi in negocio inquisicionis heretice pravitatis (‘Consultations made by lord Pere, Archbishop of Tarragona, with the advice of experts, on how to proceed in the inquiry of heretical perversity’) is an inquisitorial guide written during the second half of 1241 by the Archbishop of Tarragona Pere d'Albalat with the advice of Ramon de Penyafort. In this work we provide for the first time a critical edition of this text with the collation of all manuscripts (by Stefano M. Cingolani), a translation into Catalan (by Robert Álvarez Masalias), and an introductory study contextualising its authorship, date, and place of publication (by Sergi Grau Torras).

    After a brief review of the technological changes in PhiloBiblon since 1987, there follows a description of the current project, “PhiloBiblon: From Siloed Databases to Linked Open Data via Wikibase: Proof of Concept”. The current rigid structure, with its ten relational tables and almost 1,300 data fields, is abandoned in favor of a much more flexible structure of “triples,” records based on a series of statements of the type Entity + Property + Entity, using the system of Wikidata, in which two entities Q are linked by a property P, e.g., Santillana (Q2877) writes (P50) the “Comedieta de Ponza” (Q390408).

    La cesura épica en los trouvères: intervención de copistas y editores

    The usually called epic caesura constitutes an exception within the troubadour decasyllable; therefore, editors of this lyric manifestation have shown approaches not always respectful of the manuscript tradition in order to avoid it. In the best of cases, they felt forced to justify verses including epic caesura as an editorial option; but in the most extreme case they chose to suppress it and modify the codex’s lectio, when unique, ope ingenii. In these pages I offer just a sample of this editorial –even scribal– approach out of some of the numerous editions published from the nineteenth century on, on thirteenth-century trouvères’ texts. The best example of the reservations in adopting this type of caesura (not so exceptional), in my view, is to be found in the lyrical corpus of the troubadour Thibaut de Champagne, published on numerous occasions, the latest version of which dates from 2018.

    "Allí se puso este Libro de la Ley": breve reflexión sobre una glosa exegética al Deuteronomio 31 en la Biblia romanceada de Moshe Arragel

    This study focuses on an exegetical gloss in the Old Spanish Bible of rabbi Moshe Arragel (1st half of the 15th century), specifically on Deuteronomy 31, and its historical significance for the intellectual history of Jewish-Christian relations in late medieval Spain. This gloss, addressed to the Christian sponsor of this Bible translation, centers on an intra-biblical reference to the Jewish canon of the Bible itself as a book, that is the Torah scroll as both written literature and a physical object of synagogal worship. We analyze in some detail Arragel’s recourse to the rabbinical Bible commentaries ad locum in order to educate his Christian addressee on the divergent views of Christians and Jews about the Scriptural canon and its material textualization.

    Els viatges dels incunables del Tirant (1490 i 1497) fins a la Hispanic Society of America

    Inside and outside covers, ex-libris, supralibris, stamps, are elements that give us valuable clues to reconstruct what we call the external history of old books. Preservation of old sale catalogues with manuscripts’ and early printed editions’ prices of acquisition written down by buyers, among other data, is an invaluable resource for tracing a rich past of collections and bibliophilia, and the reception that certain works got. In this article we focus on Joanot Martorell’s novel Tirant lo Blanc, published twice in the incunable period, first by Nicolau Spindeler in Valencia in 20/11/1490 and then by Pere Miquel in Barcelona in 16/09/1497. We reconstruct the history of those copies preserved in the library of New York’s Hispanic Society of America. These copies’ journey from the old continent to the United States of America allows us to explore the small and restricted market of antiquarian book dealers in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Europe, which reveals that the preservation of these copies was made possible by the interest of European booksellers working to meet demands of American bibliophiles wishing to fill their libraries with prestigious medieval works.

    El Tractat de les mules de Manuel Díez: estat de la qüestió i prolegòmens a una edició crítica

    The Tractat de les mules ('Treatise of mules') is a veterinary treatise  written in Catalan between 1424 and 1436 by Manuel Díez, knight of Alfonso V, the Magnanimous, king of Aragon. This text forms, together with the Llibre de cavalls ('Book of horses'), the Llibre de la menescalia ('Book of veterinary’). No part of the Llibre de la menescalia has ever been critically edited, even though it is the most widespread medieval Catalan scientific text: twelve manuscripts in this language have survived, as well as translations into Neapolitan, French and Spanish – the latter with fourteen printed editions. In this article we present a reviewing update of the contributions to this treatise, focusing on the issues that have forestalled any critical edition: its complex textual history, and the anachronistic consideration of this work as plagiarism.

    “Amor Deseado”, apodo y canción: una escondida alusión a Juan de Luxemburgo, el rey ciego de Bohemia, en El Victorial

    In ch. 80 of El Victorial, the author, Gutierre Díaz de Games, presents as the youngest son of Edward III of England, in a pseudo-historical context, a blind, strong and brave knight “in love”; his soubriquet, “Desired Love” (‘Amor Deseado’), would be taken from a song composed by a poet in his memory, after he died fighting heroically. Everything leads to think that Gutierre Diaz confuses “Desired Love” with John of Luxembourg (1296-1346), the famous blind king of Bohemia who also died fighting in the battle of Crécy (1346). This article deals with mentions of this royal character, who was considered an exemplary model of chivalry. The allusion to this “Desired Love”, soubriquet and song, could come from some French poem or song that Pero Niño could have heard while travelling through France accompanied by his standard-bearer, the author of El Victorial. The numerous mentions of other French knights, military men, lovers, and sometimes even poets show that both, knight and writer, were very familiar with French courtly and poetic milieux.

    Debat i paròdia als versos de les trobairitz: Castelloza (BEdT 109,2) vs Bernart de Ventadorn (BEdT 70, 19)

    This article documents and interprets the intertextual relationship between Castelloza's BEdT 109, 2 and Bernart de Ventadorn's BEdT 70, 19. After a brief introduction to Castelloza's poetry and its critical reception, we will analyse the clues that allow us to postulate, on the part of the trobairitz, an allusive intention to the song BEdT 70, 19 by Bernart de Ventadorn. The reading of Castelloza's song in the light of this dialogical relationship, as well as the insertion of the trobairitz's lyrical voice in the troubadour corpus considered as a whole, must allow us to question the traditional vision of Castelloza as a "melancholic" poetess, aware of her inferiority in relation to the esteemed being, revealing the parodic dimension of her poetry.

    El incunable sevillano de las Coplas de Fernán Pérez de Guzmán (92PG)

    A study of the first printed cancionero exclusively devoted to Fernán Pérez de Guzmán's poetry, a classic within the fifteenth-century cancionero manuscripts, which was printed in Seville in 1492 by Meinardo Ungut and Estanislao Polono. It is presented in the context of Sevillian incunabula printing and characterized within the production of Ungut and Polono's printing house. Typographical as well as editorial identifications of this unique copy are offered.

    Una nova interpretació de la imatge lul·liana de l’amic i l’amat a partir de la seva diacronia: metàfora, tema i símbol

    This paper presents a new interpretation of the Lullian image of the lover and the beloved. It is based on the analysis of the image through the whole Ramon Llull's opus. It examines the diachrony of its evolution during thirty years and twenty-three books, from the Liber contemplationis (1273-74) to the Ars brevis (1308). This analysis, undertaken out of our preparation of a conceptually lemmatised database (the Corpus Digital d’Amic i Amat, CDAIA), suggests a new interpretation of the meaning of this image in Llull’s production and thought. Firstly, the lexicalization of the loved-beloved image as a metaphor and its ontological meaning is described. Secondly, the fiction plotline constructed during this evolution is analysed. Thirdly, the loved-beloved image is interpreted as an exemplum for its symbolic value. This metaphor works as a tool to transmit Llull’s project for a spiritual renovation, based on the Ars Lulliana.

    Un comentario en catalán a Hechos de los Apóstoles, 13-15 (s. XIV) del Archivo Parroquial de Caldes de Montbui (Vallès Oriental, Barcelona)

    Caldes de Montbui’s Parish Archive (Vallès Oriental, Barcelona) keeps a Bible fragment in Catalan dating back to the late 14th century, which is part of the rudimentary binding of a notarial book from the early 17th century. It is a commentary on several passages from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 13-15). We edit this text, and inform on its identification, location and codicological and palaeographic characteristics, as a modest addition to the Corpus Biblicum Catalanicum.

    Un poema inédito de Joan Sist en honor de Blanca de Sicilia

    This article introduces and edits a previously unpublished poem by Joan Sist –a priest from València– copied in a 16th-century manuscript by the Majorcan humanist Joan Binimelis. The extant text is incomplete and rather corrupted, but it has great interest from the point of view of literary history for several reasons: firstly, it is the only witness to Sist's literary activity, which was known despite the fact that no piece seemed to have survived. Secondly, it is the first composition dedicated to Blanca, queen consort of Sicily and later queen of Navarre. The author's identification and the rubric allows me to propose a specific event as the ocasion that originated this song: the royal entry into the city of València of the monarch Martí I of Aragon, queen Maria de Luna and their new daughter-in-law, Blanca of Navarre, on 30th March 1402. For this evento, the first public presentation of the queen of Sicily, second wife of Martí el Jove, Joan Sist composed a conventional song of praise, borrowing from the song also intended for the queen of Sicily, probably her predecessor on the trone Maria, by Andreu Febrer.
