- La tradició dels lletovaris literaris catalans: el cas de Joan Basset(2021) Romanyà, AlbaA literary electuary, lletovari in Catalan, is a poem that adopts some of the characteristics of medical recipes. Even though this term is used in many studies with naturality, the tradition of this type of poetry has not been described or studied as a whole. In this paper, the main attributes of this genre are exposed, and a provisional corpus of poems associated with it is put forward. Finally, the most outstanding work of that tradition, Joan Basset’s Lletovari, is characterised.
- La Vita beati Iohannis pii patriarche Alexandrie [BHL 4392]: editio princeps y traducción(2021) Bohdziewicz, Olga Soledad; Warburg, InésThis paper offers the editio princeps of the life of John the Almsgiver transmited in ms. Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Lat. 3820. This codex dating from the 14th century belonged to the St. Trophime cathedral of Arles. It is the only known witness of a late translation of the saint’s life written by Leontius of Neapolis, already spread across the latin world trough the version of Anastasius the Librarian. A concise introduction to the latin text and a Castilian translation are presented alongside the critical edition.
- La tradició editorial del Flos sanctorum català en el Cinccents(2021) Arronis Llopis, CarmeA first description of the sixteenth-century publishing tradition of the Catalan Flos Sanctorum. Based on the analysis of the extant copies, and the consultation of the existing bibliography, a panorama of dependencies and affiliations between the editions is presented, and each edition’s innovations –mainly in terms of textual revisions and content variations– are described. This characterization aims to help find out what were the main efforts of publishers and booksellers in order to keep this textual product valid and attractive to the public, in a turbulent time which resulted in the replacement of medieval hagiographic compilations by new reformed ones.
- La coronación de Nuestra Señora de Fernán Ruiz de Sevilla (ID 0116): variantes y variaciones(2021) Mangas Navarro, Natalia AnaísA study and cataloguing of Fernán Ruiz de Sevilla’s La coronación de Nuestra Señora (ID 0116, 15th century). Its two witnesses (ms PN6 and incunabulum Cancionero de Ramón de Llavia, 86*RL) offer abundant divergences. This study helps to shed light on the process of transmission of this poem and suggests hypotheses regarding the affiliation of its sources.
- The Presence of María de Velasco in Pinar’s Juego trobado, in the Carajicomedia, and in La novela del licenciado Vidriera by Cervantes(2021) Boase, RogerResearch on the court ladies who participated in Pinar’s Juego trobado, a card game in verse completed in 1496, led to the discovery that María de Velasco, wife of Juan Velázquez de Cuéllar, and adoptive-mother of Ignatius Loyola, subsequently appears in several literary texts, the first of which is the Carajicomedia, where she is metamorphosed into an old prostitute skilled in the arts of seduction. Surprisingly, I have detected her presence in La novela del licenciado Vidriera, one of Cervantes’ Novelas ejemplares: each of the names of the main character, given or adopted during the course of his life, is linked in some way with this lady; and, furthermore, there are other correspondences, above all the symbolism of the quince. This begs the question whether the tale was intended to convey a coded message, and if so, one wonders what kind of message. This discovery also seems to add some credence to the theory that in Don Quixote Cervantes wished to parody the life of Ignatius Loyola as well as the heroes of chivalric romance.
- Les Guidelines TEI à l’épreuve de la complexité textuelle et graphique médiévale(2021) Materni, MartaThe TEI Guidelines represent today an essential standard in the world of textual encoding for digital editions. However, some problems concerning TEI encoding, both theoretical and practical, are far from being definitively resolved. In this context we firstly discuss a theoretical question: what is the nature of the encoding? Are we interested in the Text or in its documentary image? What is the difference between a descriptive encoding and an editorial one? Secondly, we analyse the specific case of the TEI Guidelines application to the Medieval textual and writing reality: indeed, this application risks being anything but automatic, as TEI tags were set in the context of contemporary printed books.
- Legenda aurea latina, elementos apócrifos y tradición catalana(2021) Puche López, CarmenA study on Iacobus de Voragine’s warnings and observations about the apocryphal nature of some narrative elements within his Golden Legend. According to G. P. Maggioni's theory, most of these observations were inserted by Voragine in his second redaction of the work (LA2), and here we analyse to what extent and in what ways they are cited in the Legenda Aurea’s Catalan tradition, taking as the study’s basis the most recent edition of the Latin text (Maggion 2007) and four of the most important manuscripts of the Catalan tradition. We aim to provide new data about the textual history of the Catalan Golden Legend and its Latin model; and also, to find out to what extent the Catalan tradition was concerned with pinpointing its apocryphal material for the audience’s benefit.
- Los pliegos sueltos de romances RM686-RM685 y RM408-RM409: contextos, materialidad y ecdótica(2021) Garvin, MarioThis article analyses four ballad chap-books (RM686-RM685 and RM408-RM409) which form two independent series of transmission, but which by their typology and context, transcend their own individuality, revealing useful information about the influence of materiality on the contents of the printed book and on the form of the poetic text, both in these particular witnesses and in later editions.
- “Quant alcun hom demanda d’alcuna cosa dubtosa”: el Tractat de les interrogacions de Bartomeu de Tresbens, estudi i edició(2021) Giralt, SebastiàA first critical edition of the Tractat de les interrogacions by Bartomeu de Tresbens, from its incompletely preserved, unique manuscript copy (Ripoll, Biblioteca Lambert Mata, XXI, ff. 86r-98r), preceded by an introductory study. This insufficiently studied work, which had so far remained unpublished, was dedicated to King Pere the Ceremonious, and deals with the branch of astrology aiming to answer specific questions, mainly focusing on kingship and government matters. The introductory study analyses several aspects of the treatise: placement within the manuscript, date, structure, contents preserved and lost, as well as sources.
