- Instal.lació o establiment? Encara sobre els objectius de la promoció lingüística(2004) Lamuela Garcia, Francesc XavierThis article suggests a criticism on the “language normalization” concept, focusing on the dichotomy establishment (adquisition of a complete referential value) and installation (partial language standardization). The author defends the idea that Catalan can try to strengthen its status as installed language, but it will hardly attain the absolute preeminence of an established language. Its perspective is compatible with notions like “llengua pròpia” (own language) or territorial language and clashes with the neoliberals, who defend utilitarist and pseudonaturalist concepts like maximalist monolinguism.
- Ús lingüístic, legitimitat i discurs: consideracions weberianes(2004) Calaforra i Castellano, GuillemThe “psychosociological turn” of the sociology of language entails a new attention paid to the role of agency in language use. But this new approach can be coherent and complete only by taking into account the historical and political circumstances of language use, as well as the whole set of factors determining the processes by which social meanings are created and distributed. On the basis of the Weberian concept of legitimacy, this paper tries to outline the characteristics of the relationship between social discourses and the patterns of language use. It ends with some reflections on the utility and the difficulties of using critical discourse analysis in order to understand the symbolic side of language use.
- La sociolingüística de la variació als Països Catalans: estat de la qüestió(2004) Mas i Miralles, Antoni; Montoya Abat, BrauliThe results of an analysis on literature about microsociolinguistics, where you can also see a lack of theoretical congruence, are shown in this paper. The authors classify the works in three groups, depending on the community with which they deal: communities where the main spoken language is Catalan, communities where it is Spanish or communities where Catalan became extinct. From the first two groups, they review phonological and morphological studies. From the third, they suggest the study of language vestiges in communities where Catalan became extinct. Finally, they claim that macro and microsocionlinguistics should be unified and remark the interest of language variation studies for the language planning.
- Elements per a una sociologia epistèmica del llenguatge(2004) Conill, Josep J.; Salomé, AnnaThis article outlines the basic principles for a general sociology of language with a systematic purpose, and questions several aspects of the dominant “common sense”. The work of the German sociologist Niklas Luhmann (1927–1998) is used as a starter point. The authors explain Luhmann’s thinking, who understands the social system as a complex fruit of communication, autoreferential as well as autopoetical. The article shows the analytical deficiencies of Catalan sociolinguistics, limited to the study of the most basic systematic levels and suggests a more global theoretical perspective.
- Aportacions de les altres ciències socials a la sociolingüística catalana(2004) Vila i Moreno, Francesc XavierThis article reviews the contribution of the different Catalan social sciences —excepting laws and political science— to the creation of sociolinguistics as a research field. In the conclusions it is mentioned that, in spite of the fact that research on language and society has not been an exclusive field for the linguists, and although some of the sociolinguistical disciplines have attained a great level of development, the degree of exchange between different currents and disciplines is quite limited, therefore it is preferable to speak, at most, of multirateral research, rather than of real interdisciplinarity. The article concludes that the new immigration of non-Catalan speakers makes even more necessary to fight against the isolationism of the sociolinguistical currents as well as against the lack of interest for the language shown by the Catalan social sciences.
- Les representacions de la sociolingüística catalana(2004) Querol Puig, ErnestThis article analyses the sociolinguistics elaborated in the Catalan speaking countries, based on a textual corpus. First, different topics are examined; second, the most neglected aspects are indicated (with a theoretical reflection on the paradigm concept and a deep evaluation of Aracil’s work); third, the analysed common loci are compared and their relevance discussed. Finally, the representations of the studied authors are analysed from two different points of view: from a theoretical model based on the Catastrophe Theory and from the sociological paradigm perspective.
- Sobre els significants de 'blasfemar' i 'renyar': geolingüística, semàntica i etimologia(2004) Veny i Clar, JoanThis paper has a double purpose. On the one hand, to carry an onomasiological study on the concept “blasfemar, renegar”, using the Atles lingüístic del domini català (ALDC) (Q. 598) to establish its meanings and analysing its origin and evolution. On the other hand, given that one of these concepts («renegar») has derived towards “renyar, reganyar”, this article will try to establish a lexicogenetical typology of some mainly dialectal words related to that concept and, focusing on one of the most productive types (“rondinar, murmurar”), make a new etymological suggestion for the word ‘runar’, ‘renyar’.
- El programa minimista en la teoria de principis i paràmetres(2004) Picallo, M. CarmeThis paper intends to offer a general overview of the ideas that have been proposed in generative grammar in the last decade. The theoretical framework that supports them is summarized (the Principles and Parameters theory) and we explain some conceptual changes that the theory has undergone from its first formulation (known as the Government and Binding model) to the recent proposals (known as the Minimalist model). The changes introduced under the minimalist perspective obbey to the necessity of eliminating some theoretical artifacts by submitting to scrutiny some assumptions. The Minimalist view suggests that the only possible grammatical operations are the unavoidable ones that are triggered by the interaction of the linguistic system with other external systems.
