La escuela española de estilística i la pragmática
    (2000) López García-Molins, Ángel
The so-called «Spanish stylistic school», and specially pioneer linguists of this group as Amado Alonso and Dámaso Alonso, is presented in this article as a precedent of modern pragmastylistics in some interesting aspects. Nevertheless, as López García states, later authors –often considered members of this school– mainly devoted themselves of literary theory, far from the prior epistemological framework.

    De l'Homo sapiens a l'animal metafòric
    (2000) Teruel Planas, Elvira
Elvira Teruel offers a wiew of metaphor as a natural device of human cognition instead of a pure ornamental tool. Metaphor is then shown as a factor of meaning construction pervasive across different kinds of discourse, including conversation and jounalistic discourse.

La "Narrativización" del discurso y el "efecto omnisciente" en no ficción periodística
    (2000) Saavedra Vergara, Gonzalo
This article shows how the narrator can tell more than what the journalistic nonfiction orthodoxy dictates. By way of narrating a source’s speech, the narrator can report states of consciousness –i.e., feelings, thoughts, perceptions– as it happens in novels that have what is commonly known as omniscient narrators. Although this has never been studied thoroughly, it is a frequent practice in successful nonfiction texts.

Estudi estilístic i contrastiu de l'arquitectura de l'oració.: estil segmentat vs.estil cohesionat
    (2000) Cuenca Ordiñana, Maria Josep
After Serafini’s (1992) distinction between loose and cohesive style, this paper shows the influence of sentence syntax on text construction and interpretation. Several stylistic effects derived from the use of one style or the other will be discussed by analyzing and comparing some texts in Catalan, Spanish and English. This analysis will highlight common tendencies along with interesting differences among the three languages. In addition, the loose-cohesive style dichotomy will be applied to literary and journalistic discourse analysis, on the one hand, and to contrastive analysis and translation, on the other hand.

La Persiana és verda : idees de correcció i estils intel.lectuals
    (2000) Viana San Andrés, Amadeu
Arguments about purity and simplicity are recursive. We gain insight connecting purity in language with correction in other domains. The anthropologist point of view developped by Mary Douglas about «Thought Styles» may help our research in linguistic and pragmatic variation. The main aim of this paper is to show the interest of this programme and the guidelines for its application. Classical thinking about the topic (Cicero, Dante or Locke) could be considered in its proper terms, aswell as early contributions as that of Jespersen. Conflictive periods of rule conflict (on linguistic norms) could be analysed on these grounds. Discourse analysis and Catalana historiography could renovate their tacit presuppositions if we take into account how values and emotions are socially related to stylistic preferences and pragmatic compromises.

Pragmaestilística i traducció : a propòsit de La Marquesa D'O
    (2000) Guzmán Pitarch, Josep Roderic
In the last years ans in the field of translation into Catalan, there has been a lot of interest on the relationship between stylistics and translation. This line of research has been influenced by concepts developed by the Manipulation School, the theory of the polysystem and the literary translation. However, most of the studies have focussed on well-known translations and have ignored some of the translators whose work illustrates the relationship betwen stylistics and translation. This paper compares some stylistic aspects in the translation of «Die Marquise von O» by Martínez Ferrando with a more recent translation of this work by Feliu Formosa. Taking into account the pragmastylistic aspects observed in the firt lines of the translations analysed, the relationship between stylistic models ans translation is illustrated.

    L'estil nominalitzat
    (2000) Salvador Liern, Vicent
This paper deals with the subject of nominal(ized) style in contrast with clausal style. Expressing processes and qualities as entities involves a certain kind of metaphor –a grammatical metaphor, in the sense systemic functional linguistic conceives it. Furthermore this device is useful to improve the development of the thematic progression of a text. Nominalized style is characteristic of scientific academic discourse, but it widely spreads along other types of discourse, implying sometimes an effect of abstraction and opacity unsuitable for other discursive purposes and specially for literary genres.

Notes per a una estilística dels temps verbals
    (2000) Pérez Saldanya, Manuel
Tenses constitute a complex system of oppositions based on time, aspect, and temporal distance. Taking these oppositions as basic, this article deals with the stylistic properties that verbal tenses acquire in discourse. In addition, it presents an analysis of some stylistically marked uses of the imperfect, the future, the conditional, and the past perfect. In all these cases, the verbal tenses keep some of their basic properties but introduce temporal or aspectual changes that lead to pragmatic and stylistic changes closely related to certain narrative effects.

A estilística na tradiçao de língua portuguesa e os enfoques discursivos atuais
    (2000) Fiorin, José Luiz
This paper will firstly focus on the development of stylistic studies in Brazil. The stylistics that characterized such studies surpassed what might be called literary stylistics and aimed at examining the Portuguese language expressive resources. The concept of style will then be discussed in the light of current discursive perspectives, indicating how stylistic studies ar developed today. That concept will be examined from two points of view: a) the recurrence of features at the levels of expression and content, which produces a sense of individuality effect; b) the heterogeneity that constitutes the style, which is considered a discursive fact. The concept of literary text will also be analysed in order to verify whether it results from mere convention or whether such convention relies on characteristics intrinsic to the text.

Enjeux de la subjectivité et nouvelles approches de la stylistique française
    (2000) Villanueva Orbaiz, María Luisa
Our aim in this article is to outline the evolution of stylistics in France trying to build up some conceptual criteria that allow us to explain present tendencies concerning such notions as intersubjectivity and semiosphere, as well as the description of a number of rhetoric phenomena behaving as a sort of crossroads where rhetoric, pragmatics and semantics come together. Finally, we argue that not only interpretation is a game of multiple structures and perspectives, but also that style in text may similarly result from the diversity of languages and from the challenge some represent of discourse boundaries.
