This study unveils the meaning of the allegorical-mythological murals, shaped like false sculptures, which frame the scenes of a historical-familial nature decorating the salon of the Palmerola Palace in Barcelona. They were painted at the end of the XVIIIth century by Pedro Pablo Montaña, whose primary literary source was the Iconologyby Cesare Ripa. Based on this text, the painter builds the visual language, whose fidelity to the source is a paradigmatic example of utilization of this source. My research also results in the correction of previous misinterpretations, thus offering a richer and more comprehensive view of the pictorial ensemble.   KEYWORDS: Palmerola Palace; Pedro Pablo Montaña; XVIIIth century; Cesare Ripa; Iconography.

St. George was one of the best known figures in Christendom, due both to his unique story as well as for the help he gave to the various Spanish kingdoms in the fight against the enemies of Jesus Christ. His cult spread to New Spain where he was known, although not in the same manner as in Europe. But nevertheless, in the cathedral of the bishopric of Durango, the efforts of bishop Pedro Anselmo Sánchez de Tagle interests resulted in St. George being declared patron of the city in 1749 by both civil and ecclesiastical chapters. This event granted the saint another function: the fight against poisonous animals, specifically, the scorpions endemic to the region. As a result, the Saint's iconography experienced an unprecedented and meaningful change that included the depiction of a series of arachnids alongside the dragon. This is reflected in the canvas that is still located in the sacristy of this cathedral, a painting that is unique in the History of Art.   KEYWORDS: Saint George; Iconography; Bishop; Nobiliary Shield; Scorpions; Devotion; Sacristy.

This study shows the kind of woman that Sebastián de Covarrubias Orozco portrays in his Emblemas morales(1610). After a brief introduction and presentation of the author and his work, taking into account the different emblems in which a woman appears, this article studies women in general and, especially, their situation as nubile or married women, emphasizing the institutions of marriage and motherhood, with particular attention to women's participation in the education of their children; the last two sections focus on love as a passion and on beauty, respectively.   KEYWORDS: Woman; Emblems; Sebastián de Covarrubias.

The difficult situation of women in the Modern Period, marked by the strong patriarchal and androcentric character of the official culture and ideology of the moment, and their high degree of social marginalization, has been frequently analysed through various literary sources such as theatre, fiction or travel literature, collections of proverbs and sermons, and, above all, moral and doctrinal texts. However, for some time now, a new approach to the issue has been attempted which has proven to be of singular importance when observing the effect of the aforementioned directives of the dominant ideology on the familial and social role of women: illustrated symbolic literature. Through its various forms of expression--emblems, badges, hieroglyphics, allegories--this genre became, especially from the final decades of the 16thcentury, a perfectly calibrated and effective instrument when channelling the political, moral and doctrinal orientation of citizens. In the present study I offer an overview of how emblematic treatises and repertoires of allegories offer us excellent examples of the construction of the symbolic image that the dominant elites of modern times seek to spread and impose on the female gender, and their well-established and channelled behavioural norms.   KEYWORDS: Modern Period; Emblems; Female Marginality; Androcentric Control.

    (2018) Gómez Darriba, Javier

This study analyses the reasons why such a cult took root in Seville, converting the city into an authentic Jacobean capital. Likewise, it delves into an analysis of the artistic works that emerged there as a consequence of the worship of Saint James, with special attention devoted to the different motivations of it promoters for undertaking those works of art.   KEYWORDS: Saint James the Moor-slayer; Seville; Patronage of Spain; Chapter of Seville; Gonzalo Argote de Molina.

The exhibition was entitled Ecos y huellas.Desde el Trastevere al Carmenand it was sponsored by the Consorci de Museusde la GeneralitatValenciana. During her stay (1981-1983), Victoria Cano was the only woman to be awarded the scholarship, the rest of students were all men.
    (2018) Cazalla Canto, Silvia
ABSTRACT:In 1668, the emblem bookHet voorhof der ziele[The Antechamber of the Soul] was published in Rotterdam by the bookseller and humanist François van Hoogstraten. Its main argument conveys the concept of vanitas, since its point of departure is found in the Tratado de La Vanidad del mundo(Treatise of the Vanity of the World) by the Spanish preacher, friar Diego de Estella (1574). This work, rather than slavishly following the sources and content of the Spanish treatise, includes a series of variants that allow for the corroboration that it is neither plagiarism nor a translation of the Spanish original. These variant include the incorporation of works subsequent to the publication of Estella's work. o this end, the introduction of numerous quotations of the emblematist Diego Saavedra Fajardo is significant. The aim of this work is to carry out an analysis of the presence of the diplomat from Murcia in the Dutch text to determine the reasons that led Hoogstraten to introduce in his repertoire the most important Spanish emblematist of the Modern Age.   KEYWORDS: Emblematics; Modern Age; François van Hoogstraten; Diego de Estella; Diego Saavedra Fajardo; Vanity.

Divisas o empresas históricas de damas. Algunos testimonios (siglos XV y XVI)
(2018) López Poza, Sagrario; Pena Sueiro, Nieves
Devices, badges or imprese, modalities of emblematics, were used by women between the 14th and 17th centuries, although less frequently than by men. This study analyses a little more than two dozen historical devices of ladies of the XVth and XVIth centuries from the perspective of emblematic genre theory. It deals with various aspects such as the structure, the personal involvement of the owners in the design of their devices, the purpose andmanners of displaying wit employed in their composition, etc., and concludes that there are no noticeable differences between women's devices and the masculine ones, except that the impreseof ladies crafted for special occasions (to display in the course of celebrations ?invenciones?) did not contain messages of praise to males nor amorous laments, which would have been interpreted as somewhat vulgar and in bad taste, according to the mentality of the time, while gentlemen produced a large number of amorous devices.   KEYWORDS: Emblem Studies; Devices; Badges; imprese;Women; Fifteenth Century; Sixteenth Century; Visual Culture; Middle Ages; Renaissance.
