- La traducción contrahegemónica ayer y hoy: entre las independencias latinoamericanas y las luchas socioambientales(Universitat de València, 2022) Piñeiro, NancyIn this article, a historical experience of political translation in Latin America that took place during the break of the colonial ties is interwoven with current translation practices, adopting the perspective of Translation Studies, Latin American Studies, and the sociological approach to translation. On the one hand, history allows us to recognize the tradition of counterhegemonic translation in our region. On the other, a contemporary case study, the resistance to fracking in the Argentine Patagonia, allows us to see counterhegemonic translation at play in the context of socio-environmental struggles against technologies from the Global North.
- La concepción de Henri Lefebvre de naturaleza-sociedad en el proyecto revolucionario de la autogestión(Universitat de València, 2022) Napoletano, Brian; Urquijo, Pedro; Clark, Brett; Foster, John BellamyHenri Lefebvre?s intricate material-dialectical approach to the nature-society problematic, taken together with his advocacy of a praxis oriented to total transformation from the ground up through autogestion, offers a unified, critical, and dialectical approach to political ecology. Unfortunately, his work in these areas has too often been interpreted as divided and fragmentary, splitting his radical analysis of the production of space-time from his critical praxis related to autogestion. We offer a corrective to this by elaborating briefly on his use of Marx?s material-dialectical approach, outlining how Lefebvre brings this method to bear on the nature-society problematic, and how his theorization of autogestion points to a radical praxis aimed at overcoming the social-ecological contradictions of capital. His engagement with Marx?s theory of metabolic rift, and his advocacy of a radical project of autogestion as part of the critique of everyday life, serve to place the underlying issue of alienation in spatial terms, offering geography a transformative perspective that avoids positing closed systems and attempting to exhaust the various meanings assigned to nature. In this, Lefebvre demonstrates how the nature-society problematic overflows issues of ontological framing and language, calling for a unity of radical theory and practice to overcome the separations.

- 'La libertad del Diablo': una etnografía visual de la violencia contemporánea en la frontera norte de México(Universitat de València, 2022) Díaz, Paola; Cornide, Ana I.Este artículo presenta un análisis del largometraje documental La libertad del diablo (México, 2017) de Everardo González basado en teorías de la imagen, del afecto y del espacio público. En La libertad del diablo, el director entrevista a víctimas y victimarios de la guerra gubernamental contra el narcotráfico, a lo largo y ancho del territorio mexicano pero privilegiando los paisajes de la frontera norte de México, específicamente el desierto de Chihuahua. Cada entrevistado(a) aparece con una máscara que sólo deja ver ojos y labios, mientras relata el secuestro y la desaparición de un ser querido o su participación en la desaparición, ejecución o tortura de personas. Planteamos que este dispositivo fílmico, a través de las máscaras que ocultan los rostros, muestra cómo la violencia desafilia y genera un espacio de la desaparición del lazo social y humano. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, estas máscaras, al dejar ver ojos-miradas y labios-palabras, pueden hacer un llamado ético a crear un testimonio y un público-testigo del sufrimiento y del horror. Así este documental tiene el potencial de transformarse en imagen, toda vez que se genera una triada en movimiento entre lo que se muestra, el público-testigo que ejerce una mirada y las significaciones compartidas que genera. De tal modo documentales como éste participan de movimientos anti-necropolíticos.
- Migración y frontera: una topografía circular de la violencia fronteriza. Una mirada sobre la obra de Cristian Pineda(Universitat de València, 2022) Naveau, PascaleThe paper explores the artistic work of Cristian Pineda and wants to lead the reader to the migratory trails of the Mexican borders. To this end, the article confronts the situation of violence that affects the country?s borders. Considering this violence as generalized and generalizable cycles, the text approaches a dialogue between art and migration, borders and violence, memory and justice. The purpose of the reading is to understand how art can be an alternative to numbers, statistics and institutional discourses to talk about borders and migrants. For this, the article exposes the process of creation of the artwork as well as its exhibition to the public and the social interactions that this provokes. The final objective is to understand how art can assume a social and political position in the context of border violence in northern Mexico, particularly in the Arizona desert.
- Tren con destino "al otro lado": representación de la migración y las violencias fronterizas en 'El viaje de los cantores'(Universitat de València, 2022) Shlykova Yanchina, TamaraIn this article we will analyse El viaje de los cantores (1989), a play by Hugo Salcedo. Our objective is to address interdisciplinary aspects, starting from a sociocultural and historical study and getting to see the techniques used for the expression of different problems of the border between Mexico and the United States in the selected work. To do this, the content of the text itself and its structure will be examined. Also, in order to draw conclusions about the author?s intention and the function of the message that he intends to transmit to his audience and readers, we will have to study the displaced situation suffered by the characters. Furhermore, in order to make a holistic analysis of El viaje de los cantores, it is impossible to do without considering the proposal of the playwright Mauricio Pimentel, who added another scene in 2013, entitled Años, lustros, después?. Here, women take over, being now the protagonists. With this act, Pimentel continues with Salcedo?s legacy, adding another conflict that is gaining more ground in the artistic field.
- Espacio, identidad y violencia en 'Sueños de frontera'(Universitat de València, 2022) Parra Sánchez, Diego ErnestoSueños de frontera emerges after its publication in 1991 as a rara avis within the literary project dedicated to Belascoarán Shayne´s crime fiction saga. Set mainly in Mexico City and with the anti-PRI political and social denunciation as the predominant intention, Taibo II on this occasion moves the narrative to the northern border of Mexico with the purpose of projecting an incisive reflection on problems which go beyond literary or artistic motives. In addition to make this novel known in the field of cultural studies on Mexico and its border, this research article aims to reflect on its capacity for critical portrayal within Latin American neo-police narrative. In this sense, it will focus on two core themes of the story: on the one hand, the approach to issues such as space and border identity in the novel; on the other, the contextualized approach to the complex problem of the border / violence binomial, especially with regard to the origins and social consequences behind the Narco State that is based in this part of the country and with a look at the human exploitation that lies behind the migrations that this criminal regime fosters

- 'Cien años de soledad': una conversación sobre 'El ascenso a la gloria de un clásico'(Universitat de València, 2022) Vanden Berghe, Kristine; Santana Acuña, AlvaroAscent to Glory, written by the historian and sociologist Álvaro Santana Acuña, has been applauded by critics and readers as an essential book to understand the global creation and consagration of one of the most important novels of the last century, Cien años de soledad, by Gabriel García Márquez. Ascent to Glory has also been praised for offering new ideas and innovative approaches to topics such as collective creation, the myth of the solitarian and brilliant writter, the process of learning creative skills and hidden humour in classics. Santana Acuña talks about all of these topics and others to Kristine Vanden Berghe, teacher at the Romantic Literature and Language Department in Lieja's University, and author of different articles about García Márquez's works and the Latinoamerican Boom.
- Multilingualism and Gentrification in Lavapiés' Linguistic Landscape(Universitat de València, 2022) Saiz de Lobado García, María EsterThe following interdisciplinary paper is a sociolinguistic-based analysis of the discursive strategies associated to multilingualism and interculturality in Lavapiés, Madrid. This study will focus on the visible semiotic sings observed in the public space, which in turn reflect the languages used and the products marketed in Lavapiés. However, the samples also suggest that this -genuine- interculturality is being exploited as a marketing strategy linked to gentrification. The combined analysis of both realities will allow, together with data from official sources, to draw a complete picture of this specific territory. Multilingualism and gentrification will be analysed using a Linguistic Landscape perspective, by studying the samples contained in Lavapiés? Linguistic Cartography, that include traces of these two parallel processes the territory is undergoing. A detailed contextualization of the territory -where these communicative, social, and economic events take place- will also be provided since this area has historically helped shape Madrid?s genuine tradition. The observed results have not only revealed that both processes are present and undergoing in this territory, but also the power imbalance between the languages, the effects of globalization ?touristification and gentrification-, the organized response by the neighbours of Lavapiés, as well as the longterm effects of colonialism.

- La fábula invertida: ficciones de la carne en la narrativa breve española contemporánea(Universitat de València, 2022) Pallardó Azorín, BetlemLa tendencia en la literatura contemporánea a la figuración de las problemáticas animales se enmarca en una sensibilidad creciente de la sociedad hacia la alteridad no humana. Poniendo el foco en la temática de la industria cárnica, este artículo se propone investigar cómo la narrativa breve española contemporánea se sirve del mecanismo de animalización del ser humano para efectuar un desplazamiento del binomio ontológico animal-humano al binomio biopolítico bíos-zoé, en términos de Agamben. La figura del ser humano considerado vida fisiológica destinada al consumo, paradójicamente, restaura al animal ausente en la cultura de la carne. Así, este tipo de ficciones ?fábulas invertidas? tratan al animal en sí mismo y no como medio para acceder a lo humano. Se recoge, en primer lugar, un corpus de quince relatos publicados desde el año 2014 que problematizan la cultura de la carne a través de la animalización del ser humano. En segundo lugar, se analizan dos ejemplos representativos de tales relatos: ?El Pastor?, de Cristina Jurado, y ?La granja?, de Izaskun Gracia. Se estudia además, desde una perspectiva de género, la vinculación entre violencia patriarcal y violencia especista planteada en las ficciones literarias.
- De guerras civiles y otros zombis. Un análisis comparativo de dos casos en la narrativa hispana(Universitat de València, 2022) Calzón García, José AntonioThis article attempts a comparative study between two contemporary novels whose plots are set in the context of the Spanish Civil War, but from a zombie re-reading: Noche de difuntos del 38, by Manuel Martín, and 1936Z. La Guerra Civil zombi, by Javier Cosnava. To do this, the symbolic value of the character of the zombie in contemporary narrative is previously analyzed, stressing in particular its semantic polyvalence, especially regarding its effectiveness as a metaphor of societies in crisis. In addition, connections among war, power and zombie universe are also studied, in order to assess the specific importance of biopolitics as a tool of the power with which an anonymous member of a group can be controlled by means of management of life and death. Finally, conclusions show that, even both novels agree in developing a merciless criticism to the instrumentalization of soldiers ?seen as real monsters? in war contexts, narrative strategies or the characterization of the zombie are totally different from one novel to another, according to aspects like the humanization of the living dead, his origin or his membership to one of the factions in conflict, for instance.
- Una carta de amor fan: 'Quizá Brigitte Bardot venga a tomar una copa esta noche' de Alfonso López Gradolí(Universitat de València, 2022) Zorita Arroyo, DiegoBased on an interview Anibal Núñez for Triunfo, this article briefly describes the demystifying project attempted by some poets in late-francoist Spain which tried to criticize the erotization of consumption appropriating some of its rhetorical instruments. Against this background, I analyze Alfonso López Gradolí?s Quizá Brigitte Bardot venga a tomar una copa esta noche (1971), a long poem which shares motives and techniques with the previously mentioned. However, Gradolí?s long poem constitutes a lyrical contribution to Brigitte Bardot?s mythification which became a symbol of the ?cultura del destape?. A political reading of Gradolí´s willingly experimental work shows how it join forces with the cultural and moral modernization aim by late-francoism and that what?s no other thing but a spectacular display of naked female bodies.
- 'Versos al paso' de Madrid: atlas poético, cultura popular y significación política(Universitat de València, 2022) Laín Corona, GuillermoIdea original del colectivo Boa Mistura, Versos al paso consistió en 2018 en la inscripción de textos breves en pasos de peatones de Madrid. Con la herramienta de los estudios culturales, este artículo hace un análisis del proyecto como arte urbano, cultura popular y geografía literaria. Aunque tuvo la canalización institucional del Ayuntamiento de Madrid, Versos al paso agregó voces distintas de la ciudadanía, con textos escritos por personas anónimas y por representantes destacados de la cultura. Esta agregación puede estudiarse a la luz de las ideas de Gramsci sobre el pueblo y la cultura. Por eso, y por su vinculación con formas alternativas del arte, como el grafiti, Versos al paso puede leerse como un ataque contra las estructuras hegemónicas; así se ve explícitamente en algunos textos. Sin embargo, siguiendo la misma teoría de agregación, otros textos responden a lógicas posmodernas de la sociedad de consumo y la industria cultural.
- Amada en 'La esfinge': la "Madame Bovary" de Miguel de Carrión(Universitat de València, 2022) Aparicio, YannelysMiguel de Carrión is perhaps the most important narrator of Cuba?s early Republic, a period during which the island is torn between traditions that resulted for centuries of Colonial rule and the the search for an identity in the context of the modern world. His two best known novels, Las honradas (1917) and Las impuras (1919), have been related with some frequency to Flaubert and naturalism. However, so far no one has noticed that Carrión?s fully Flaubertian novel is La esfinge, written at the end of the 1920s and published only in 1961, several decades after its author?s death. In it, the female protagonist, Amada, who is patterned after Emma Bovary, represents a kind of ?disappointed romanticism?, as Vargas Llosa has already observed, through which Carrión, in view of the enormous difficulties of the Republic in building a modern nation, conveys a desire to return to the ideals of the nineteenth century independentist movements.
- No domesticación, politización, erotismo y crueldad en reescrituras de cuentos de hadas de Pilar Quintana y Ena Lucía Portela(Universitat de València, 2022) Bustamante Escalona, María FernandaEn este texto se presenta una aproximación a ?Caperucita se come al lobo?, de Pilar Quintana (Colombia, 1972), y ?El sueño secreto de Cenicienta?, de Ena Lucía Portela (Cuba, 1972), partiendo de la idea de que ambos cuentos ?vistos como artefactos culturales con una clara conciencia de género? funcionan como escrituras revisionistas de los relatos clásicos, que empoderan y politizan a personajes femeninos que tradicionalmente han carecido de enunciación propia o se han caracterizado por su sumisión. Al mismo tiempo que, con un tono paródico y satírico, resignifican y problematizan ciertos elementos-símbolos relacionados con la construcción de las identidades de género y sus estereotipos, y con las violencias del patriarcado, para desde ahí articular sus reivindicaciones y críticas.
- A golpe de metáforas en el frente discursivo. Isaac Rosa, prologuista (2008-2021)(Universitat de València, 2022) Vauthier, BénédicteEn esta contribución se analizan los treinta y cuatro prólogos escritos (2008-2021) por Isaac Rosa. Desatendida hasta la fecha, esta producción acompaña una variedad inusual de textos. De carácter descriptivo, la primera parte del artículo se centra en la autoría de los libros y asienta una tipología y cronología de los escritos. En la segunda parte, se ?da un sentido de conjunto? a este corpus fragmentado que acaba desvelando un denso tejido de escritura crítica y pone al descubierto una nueva faceta de la obra rosiana. Acorde con la producción narrativa del autor, el corpus se deja articular en torno a dos ejes temáticos: la memoria histórica, por un lado, la economía y el neoliberalismo, por otro, que se suelen subsumir en el sintagma ?literatura y política?. No obstante, la atención prestada a las secuencias históricas y a los marcos enunciativos privilegiados por el prologuista devenido en crítico invita a actualizar el paradigma para hablar de ?literatura y democracia?.
- El caso de Laja y San Rosendo: uso de archivos en el relato de violaciones a los derechos humanos en cine documental y libro-reportaje(Universitat de València, 2022) Lattanzi Vizzolini, María Laura; Torres Agüero, Antonia; Ruiz, MarcelaThis article analyzes and compares the use of files on human rights violations during the Chilean dictatorship (1973-1990) in the construction of the story of the book-reportage A la sombra de los cuervos by Javier Rebolledo (2016) and the documentary Las cruces of Teresa Arredondo and Carlos Vásquez Méndez (2019). Both works deal with the case known as ?La masacre de Laja y San Rosendo? in which, in October 1973, nineteen workers from the rural area were murdered by the police, with the complicity of the private company, the collaboration of civilians and the subsequent omission and negligence of justice. The analysis focuses on the archive-operations that both cultural productions carry out with the aim of building a true and coherent account of the events. The review of both the different types of archives, its origin, materiality, exhaustiveness in use and in general its narrative function in each of the works, gives an account of the type of operation this device performs in the different stories of the present about a past in constant dispute and marked by omissions and the absence of truth and justice.
- "El barro de la revolución". Entrevista a Paloma Polo(Universitat de València, 2022) Borrego Errazu, Miguel; Pedregal, AlejandroLa práctica artística de Paloma Polo (1983) ha progresado a través de una inmersión continua en zonas de malestar, disturbios y lucha. Su propuesta es idear y poner en escena relatos e historias que capturen el surgimiento del pensamiento político en las personas, para explorar, así, configuraciones sociales particulares como condiciones previas o potencialidades para el cambio político. Esta aproximación exige, desde su perspectiva, prestar atención a cosmovisiones que se suprimen violentamente en la creación y normalización de categorías políticas ?incluso en aquellas que son emancipadoras?, además de observar imaginarios políticos que son invisibilizados o permanecen sin reconocer. La práctica artística de Polo es la de una investigación situada, basada en la conversación, a menudo por medio de la implicación política y el compromiso personal. Sus narraciones y ficcionalizaciones audiovisuales son entendidas como una mediación tentativa destinada a comprender la remodelación de las relaciones sociopolíticas en el conjunto de sus complejos movimientos.Esta conversación versa sobre su trabajo junto al Nuevo Ejército del Pueblo (NPA, por sus siglas en inglés) en Filipinas, país al que llegó 2013 tras obtener una plaza como Visiting Research Fellow en el Centre for International Studies, University of the Philippines Diliman, en Manila. Como resultado de su inmersión y participación activa en la guerrilla, Polo realizó la película El barro de la revolución (2019) y un volumen compilatorio de poesía revolucionaria del NPA, en el marco de su muestra en el Centro de Arte 2 de Mayo de Madrid, ?Paloma Polo. El Barro de la Revolución? (2019).
