- Eros / Thanatos en El rapto de las Sabinas de Francisco García Pavón(2017) Andújar Cantón, José IgnacioGarcía Pavón is currently an almost unknown author, in spite of the fact that he enjoyed a great popularity in his time because of his countless literary awards and the television adaptations of his police stories. Our paper, which deals with the Classical tradition in one of his first detective stories, El rapto de las Sabinas, attempts to save him from oblivion. This same writer, who is an expert in Classical Literature, considers Latin authors a valuable resource to shape a peculiar work with a setting and features of its own. This tradition may be observed in both the classical recurrent themes collected by García Pavón in his stories. It is therefore our aim to prove that the Classical World survives in García Pavón´s work, where it is wisely given a sense of thematic and style unity.
- Frankenstein o el moderno teúrgo: la recepción de la magia hermética en la obra de Mary Shelley(2017) Sánchez Pérez, CarlosThis work considers the relationship between the novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus and nineteenth-century esotericism with Hermeticism and its magical practices. We will focus on the influence of theurgy, a very popular magical-religious practice among the Neoplatonic movements of the first centuries of our era. In its Hermetic form, the art of animating statues through the attraction of their internal divine powers stands out. On the one hand, we will present an analysis of the path that this unique practice follows until it reaches Frankenstein. On the other hand, we will deal with the reception of the motive in this work.
- Discusión entre Anténor y Telamón en Troilus de Alberto Estadense(2017) Raya, LourdesIn this article we aim to show how Albert of Stade in his epic poem Troilus, transforms the not-direct style of Dares, his main inspiration, into direct style. We begin with a short presentation to the author and his work to continue with an analysis of his narrative style taking as an example the dialogue between Telamon and Antenor when the latter embarks on the search of Hesione. We compare this fragment in two other medieval poems who also have Dares as a main source of inspiration, Roman de Troie and De Bello Troiano, pointing out the similarities and differences that they show with Troilus.
- La nostalgia por la tierra natal: Ifigenia en Táuride de Lesya Ukrainka(2017) Nizhelovska Pereginets, TetyanaSince Ancient Greek era, the character of Iphigenia is the symbol of female sacrifice for homeland glory. Many authors represent their homesickness with their own version of the Euripides? Iphigenia in Tauris. Therefore, Lesya Ukrainka, an Ukrainian writer from the early 20th century, is based on Euripides? Iphigenia in Tauris and Goethe?s version of it. She expresses her own desire to return to her home. In her brief drama ???????? ? ??????? ?Iphigenia in Tauris?, it is shown the perfect symbiosis of the classical Greek culture with the Ukrainian 20th century one. I shall present the reception of Ancient Greek myth, located in actual Crimea, in Lesya Ukrainka?s literary work.
- Ifigenia en Áulide como tragedia política y su repercusión en el mundo ilustrado: la Iphigenia de Jovellanos(2017) Sebastià Sáez, MaríaThe focus on this paper is to bring to light Jovellanos? translation (1769) of Jean Racine?s Iphigénie (1674), regarding to the purpose of this translation and the subsequent hiding of it. The tragedy was not published or was included in canonical Jovellanos? corpora. In 2007 the drama manuscript appears in the Spanish Monastery of San Millán de Yuso: its archivist and librarian finds it. I shall study Iphigenia in Aulis as a political tragedy since Euripides drama to lately versions, recreations and 18th century translations. It was written to show universal facts, but also the different contemporary social and political backgrounds of their authors, trying to avoid the censorship. Therefore, I will show a general outlook of the myth attending to warlike and estate issues, and to the specific recreation of the myth during the age of Enlightenment taking Jovellanos as a model.
XII(2017) Varillas Sánchez, IsabelMany ancient authors identified Peisistratus as the editor ?not author? of the Homeric poems. They thought that the poems were transmitted orally until the 6th century B.C., when the Athenian tyrant Peisistratus commanded to write them down. The aim of this study is to consider how some Byzantine scholars approached this tradition. For this purpose, we selected the commentary to the Iliad of Eustathius of Thessalonica, where it was mentioned, and connected it with other contemporary texts.
- El bestiario de la «Ecloga Theoduli». La utilización de los animales como desprestigio del paganismo(2017) Ranero Riestra, LauraThe Ecloga Theoduli is a bucolic poem from the ninth century whose purpose is to demonstrate the superiority of Christian dogma over pagan superstition. To prove this, the allegory is used seeking to assimilate the pagan myth to the negative things from a Christian perspective, the diabolism. One of the traits that can identify the demonic in the work, and highly relevant, is the appearance of animals related to the devil in medieval Christian thought and bestiary. This paper provides an analysis of the animal allegory that appears in the work to demonstrate the daimonic assimilation of its appearance in the pagan interventions.
- Tal como eran y cómo los vieran. La anécdota literaria en Valerio Máximo(2017) Martínez Gea, AnaIn his work Facta et dicta memorabilia, Valerius Maximus bequeaths to posterity many anecdotal stories during his life experienced by some Roman writers. After a previous definition of requirements to be met by a story to be considered anecdote, we proceed to the collection of these and their transmission in later literature; then we analyze the biographical and personality traits of those Roman authors that they adduced from them.
- El eco de la voz latina en las gramáticas sobre el español(2017) Villanueva García, CarlosThe concept of voice in grammar is a controversial issue; that is due to the doctrinal divergence which has already conceived since Graeco-Roman world. This paper doesn?t intend to add doctrine or to take up position in the discussion. Our purpose is otherwise: it attempts to recover some of causes that contribute the controversy, that is, historiographic non-exhaustive immersion in the theoretical origins of the concept and the term voice in Spanish, Latin and Greek grammars.
- La tragedia a ojos de los cómicos: algunos ejemplos paradigmáticos de paratragedia(2017) Navarro Martínez, Vivian Lorena???????????? is defined as a parody of actions and characters from tragedies. It?s comic success originates from the juxtaposition between what the characters say and the context in which the scene develops. Thus we can find «lower class» characters using the language of those from the «higher class», like the tragic style, therefore creating a comic situation and evoking laughter from the audience. However, paratragedy goes beyond this purpose; if we study it carefully we can see the influence of tragedy within the comic play. This shows the clear background of literary criticism which we find reflects the work of the tragic poets, their ideas or literary style. Our aim is to establish the general characteristics of paratragedy, through a sequence of examples extracted from Old and Middle comedy.
- El prólogo de Filoctetes: un ejemplo de transgresión ritual y caracterización del personaje(2017) Pérez Lambás, FernandoIn this paper we analyze the first verses of Sophocles? Philoctetes (vv. 1-11). In these verses, Odysseus describes the circumstances of the abandonment of Philoctetes in the island of Lemnos. These verses summarize the main characteristics of Philoctetes. We have divided these characteristics in three sections: First of all, we study the verb employed to describe this abandonment, ???????, whose purpose is to highlight the social isolation of Philoctetes. In second and in third place, we study the reason of this isolation: the stain of blood and the wild shouts. This isolation is also highlighted by many poetic and ritual images which recall a character that has become an animal for which the ritual rules that unite human societies have been altered.
- El «travestimiento burlesco» de Hércules en Ov. Her. IX. (55-118)(2017) Blázquez Noya, AlbaHercules, traditionally considered the great hero of the Greeks, the symbol of salvation and the incarnation of masculinity, receives a strong «de-heroizing» treatment in Ovid?s Letter from Deianira to Hercules, a work in which a whole passage paints him completely as a cross-dresser. We refer to the passage that narrated Hercules?s time as a slave (and lover) of Omphale in Lydia. In this article we see how Deianira utilizes the standards of the model of ideal masculinity to ridicule her husband by reminding him of the times he did not live up to that model, and applies to Hercules practically all of the elegiac code of the lover as a servant at the orders of his domina
- El significado de ???????? en las inscripciones griegas(2017) Kádas, GrétaFor the adjective ???????? modern dictionaries and translators propose numerous meanings. However, a thorough analysis of the Greek inscriptions allows questioning the polysemic nature of the adjective. It can be discarded that ???????? refers to the manufacturing technique of an object, while the meaning of chromatic discontinuity or diversity is always possible.
