Covariance of Latin American Elite Attitudes Towards the USA and China

This chapter aims at deepening the understanding of the attitudes of Latin American political elites towards the United States and China, focusing on the predictors of support for these two powers. To do this we rely on the Political Elites of Latin America Database (PELA-USAL), which gathers surveys administered to legislators from 18 democracies. Two dimensions are analyzed: opinions on the influence of both the United States and China, and the trustworthiness of their respective governments. This study tests whether views among Latin American political elites towards these two global powers are related, and whether the reasons behind rejection/support are in opposition or, on the contrary, equivalent.
