Abstract
To address and reverse this situation, a research and participatory educational project was carried out during 2022 and 2023 on the Palancia River in the Valencian Community. The initiative, titled La Geografia vora riu. Joves pel riu Palància (Geography at River Level. Youth for the Palancia River), sought to encourage a renewed connection between the riverside population and the river through coordinated work between different institutions and social actors. The project was implemented using a combination of educational activities in secondary schools and various outreach and public participation initiatives in the municipality of Sagunt (Valencia). All these actions were documented using different techniques to ensure their improvement and allow for their future replication in other areas with similar characteristics. The results show a useful pathway for helping society unlearn certain widespread misconceptions about temporary rivers. They also demonstrate that teaching methodologies based on the use of social media and service-learning approaches have a strong impact on students, who are able to identify more closely with their surrounding environment. This fosters a sense of belonging to the territory and shared responsibility for its conservation, both of which are essential for promoting the renewed social reconnection with these natural spaces.
