Abstract
In this work, the animal-powered waterwheels of the meanders of the Medjerda in Testour, a Tunisian town with a Moorish foundation, have been analyzed. The environmental characteristics (geological, climatic, hydrological and hydrogeomorphic) of this sector have been considered in order to weigh their effect on the use of this type of technique and its location. The characteristics of these systems have also been analyzed, such as technical aspects, technological evolution and current state, as well as their coexistence with other traditional irrigation systems. The outstanding significance of these environmental factors, especially the hydrogeomorphic ones, in the specific location of this water harvesting technique, which complement the purely cultural ones is highlighted.
