Abstract

This thesis aims to study the critical edition of the manuscript 162 of the Archive of Valencia Cathedral, called "Liber instrumentorum". This is the cartulary of Valencia Cathedral, which was directed and compiled by Bishop Hugo de Lupià and Bagés (Bishop of Valencia between 1397 and 1427). It contains documents related to the Valencian economy such as grants, bequests, tithes and other diocesan issues, following the conquest of Valencia by James I the Conqueror, during the thirteenth, fourteenth and first third of the fifteenth century. Despite of its unquestionable importance, the manuscript has only been studied in depth regarding its miniature. Its content has never until now been total or partially edited or studied. Therefore, its textual aspects and its significance as an organizing tool for Valencia Cathedral heritage are unknown. In this thesis we made a critical edition and study, not only of the formal aspects but also textual, codicological and paleographical aspects. To do this we undertook transcription and critical reading of the text, including footnotes, abbreviations, variants, corrections, interpolations, until the final settlement of the text. The Archive of Valencia Cathedral retains other cartularies besides Liber Instrumentorum, manuscript 162. A previous one, codex 399, and a later one, dated in 1557 (codex 307), have the same content as codex 162. However, being the codex 399 earlier than 162, the reason we chose the latter for our thesis is that it is more complete, so I considered appropriate to carry out the study of manuscript 162. We have made a comparison between the two codices, 162 and 399, showing that Liber Instrumentorum is a copy of manuscript 399. Both cartularies contain almost the same documents, related in the same order. The contents, signs and marginal notes are coincident in both manuscripts. Codex 162 is a copy of codex 399 but, as mentioned above, is more complete since, from document number 170, it adds medieval documents that are not included in cartulary 399. The corresponding critical edition and study are accompanied by an onomastic and toponymic index, and also a list of documents contained in the codex.
