A total of 24 Populus taxa, 9 species and 15 hybrids, are recorded outside urban areas, one of them cited in error. Three species and one hybrid are native. One hybrid has been widely used and another is expanding; and the rest have been planted locally. Despite the abundance of P. nigra, information on native populations of its subspecies is limited, as it has been considered alien. Populations of native taxa may be affected by habitat destruction and genetic pollution. More knowledge of native populations, especially of P. nigra, is needed for its conservation.
