This study examines the biogeographical importance and phytosociological identification of the most southwestern mountainous forests of Quercus pyrenaica in the European continent. These oak forests are located in the mountain range known as Tentudía-Aguafría, in the south-west of the Iberian Peninsula, between the provinces of Badajoz and Huelva. As a result, the forests located at more elevation have been identified as a new subassociation: Sorbo torminalis-Quercetum pyrenaicae centaureetosum tentudaicae subass. nova. This new subassociation constitutes the most south-western chorological irradiation of the Lusitanian-Extremaduran orophilic oak forests. They also form part of a unique bioclimatic environment, due to their altitude and because they are very isolated from the rest of the locations of the association and alliance, which is why their conservation should be a priority objective for both autonomous governments
