Algunes de les principals conjectures en Teoria de Representacions de Grups Finits admeten refinaments en termes de p-blocs de Brauer. Actualment només es veu un camí per a atacar aquest tipus de conjectures: reduir-les a problemes de grups simples i utilitzar la Classificació dels Grups Finits Simples per a resoldre-les. Entenem per reduir a un problema de grups simples que el problema té solució sempre que es comproven una sèrie de condicions per a tots els grups finits simples. Per descomptat, els subgrups normals (i els seus caracters irreductibles) juguen un paper fonamental en aquest procés. Una de las tècniques principals utilitzades en la reducció de certs problemes de teoria de caracters a problemes de grups simples és estudiar una versió projectiva de els mateixos. Amb açò volem dir el següent: siga N un subgrup normal de G, siga theta un caracter irreductible de N i siga Irr(G|theta) el conjunt de constituents irreductibles del caracter induït theta^G. Fer una versió projectiva d’un problema és reformular-lo en termes de Irr(G|theta) en lloc de Irr(G). Per a açò necessitem entendre totalment la teoria de caracters sobre el caracter theta. Seguint aquesta filosofia, si volem atacar algunes conjectures que involucren p-blocs, necessitem entendre totalment la teoria de blocs sobre theta. Aquesta és la motivació darrere de gran part d’aquesta tesi. Al Capítol 1 donem prerrequisits sobre teoria de caracters ordinaris i modulars. Al Capítol 2 definim un conjunt de blocs canònicament construïts sobre un caracter d’un subgrup normal. Aquests blocs estaran definits respecte d’un primer p i un caracter irreductible theta d’un subgrup normal, i els anomenarem theta-blocs. Definim els theta-blocs utilitzant representacions projectives i la teoria de character triples introduïda per I. M. Isaacs. Una part no trivial d’aquest treball és provar que els theta-blocs són una partició canònica del conjunt Irr(G|theta). A més a més, a cada theta-bloc li associarem una única classe de conjugació de p-subgrups de G/N, els theta-grups defecte. Veurem que, en general, els theta-grups defecte es comporten com els grups defecte dels p-blocs de Brauer clàssics. Al Capítol 3 seguim estudiant el conjunt Irr(G|theta) i donem una generalització del conegut teorema de Howlett-Isaacs. Aquest teorema diu el següent: si theta és G-invariant i |Irr(G|theta)| = 1, aleshores G/N és resoluble. Aquest teorema va ser una de les primeres aplicacions de la Classificació dels Grups Finits Simples a la teoria de caracters. La nostra generalització diu així: si A actúa per automorfismes sobre G deixant N i theta invariants, i A permuta transitivament els elements de Irr(G|theta), aleshores G/N és resoluble. En aquest capítol també tractem amb una conjectura de J. F. Humphreys: si tots els caracters en Irr(G|theta) tenen el mateix grau, aleshores G/N és resoluble. En aquest treball donem una caracterització grup-teòrica d’aquesta situació sota certes hipòtesis sobre G i N. Per últim, al Capítol 4 tractem amb una pregunta clàssica, formulada per Richard Brauer a la seua famosa llista de problemes: sap la taula de caracters de G quants p-subgrups de Sylow té G? En aquesta tesi donem una resposta afirmativa a aquesta pregunta en alguns casos. Per a això, obtenim una fórmula que permet calcular el nombre de punts fixats per l’acció d’un p-grup sobre un grup d’ordre coprimer amb p, generalitzant un resultat clàssic del propi Brauer.

Some of the main conjectures in the Representation Theory of Finite Groups admit refinements in terms of Brauer p-blocks. Besides, blocks bring more structure into these problems. It is a general belief today that the way to approach these conjectures is through a reduction of them to problems on simple groups, and then use the Classification of Finite Simple Groups to solve them. By reducing a problem to simple groups we mean that the problem has a positive solution provided that a specific set of conditions is checked for every simple group One of the main techniques used in the reduction of character theory problems to simple groups is the study of projective versions of these conjectures. By a projective version we mean the following: let N be a normal subgroup of G, let theta be an irreducible character of N, and write Irr(G|theta) for the set of the irreducible constituents of the induced character theta^G. We want to formulate the statement of our problem in terms of Irr(G|thea) instead of Irr(G). In other words, we need to fully understand the character theory over the character of a normal subgroup. Following this philosophy, if one wants to attack some of the conjectures involving blocks, one needs to understand not only the character theory over a character of a normal subgroup, but also the block theory. This motivates the main part of this thesis: we shall define a set of canonical blocks that are constructed over a character of a normal subgroup, the definition of the theta-blocks. In Chapter 2, we define the theta-blocks. The theta-blocks are defined by means of projective representations, using the theory of the character triples introduced by I. M. Isaacs and a non-trivial part of this work is to prove that they constitute a canonical partition of the set Irr(G|theta), that is: theta-blocks are canonical and independent of any choice made in order to define them. Also, associated to every theta-block there is a uniquely defined G/N-conjugacy class of p-subgroups of G/N which we call the theta-defect groups. They behave as the defect groups of the classical Brauer p-blocks. In Chapter 3, we continue with the study of the set Irr(G|theta) from a different point of view. We give a generalization of the renowned Howlett-Isaacs taking into account the action of Aut(G) on Irr(G|theta). In Chapter 4, we deal with a classical question in representation theory of finite groups formulated by R. Brauer in his famous list of problems: does X(G) determine the number of Sylow p-subgroups of G? We give a positive answer to this question in some specific cases. Perhaps even more interesting than the result itself is the way it is obtained. It turns out that we need to compute the number of fixed points under the action of a p-group on a group of order coprime to p, and we give a formula to compute this number in terms of information that can be collected from the character table. This result generalizes a classical result of Brauer (and H. Wielandt).
