Immigració i adquisició de segones llengües
(2003) Serrat, Elisabet; Gràcia Sole, Lluïsa
This article presents a descriptive study about the role of transfer in the second language acquisition of Catalan by immigrant learners. The analysis focuses on errors of verbal morphology produced by six learners of Catalan as a second language whose first languages were Arabic, Chinese, and Soninke. The results are analyzed taking into account the development of interlanguage and the influence of the tense-aspect system of the first language.

This article applies grammaticalization theory to the process of acquisition of past morphology (perfective and imperfective) by learners of Catalan as a foreign language. It argues that diachronic and acquisitional grammaticalization show clear parallels in the evolution of past morphology. These parallels are contrasted with the aspect and discourse hypotheses, which argue that lexical and discourse characteristics of verbal predicates can explain the development of past morphology in a second language. Beginner data on the acquisition of Catalan confirmed that both lexical aspect and discourse grounding contribute to the grammaticalization of past meaning in interlanguage.

    (2003) Quer, Josep
This article offers an overview of research in sign language acquisition by children, mostly in American Sign Language. The results indicate that the developmental milestones and the linguistic errors made by children acquiring a sign language coincide with those observed in hearing children acquiring spoken languages. The visual-gestural modality is shown not to have the expected impact on the acquisition processes, which is arguably regulated by strictly linguistic principles.

This article reflects upon new observations and old concepts related to the acquisition of syntax by examining the strengths and weaknesses of research in acquisitional syntax. Two of the strengths are the interdisciplinary nature of child acquisitional studies and the potential dialogue between research in theoretical syntax and acquisitional syntax. A weakness, possibly the result of excessive specialization, is the lack of real dialogue in general debates related to central foundational concepts in syntax, such as the poverty of stimulus argument or the conception of Universal Grammar. This article reviews two recent publications that touch upon these topics and discusses the results in light of research in early syntax within the generative paradigm

    (2003) Sanz, Cristina
The last ten years have witnessed a growing interest in the acquisition of third languages (L3s). Due to their sociolinguistic characteristics, Catalonia and the Basque Country are at the forefront in production of published empirical research in L3 acquisition. This article provides a review of research in L3 acquisition and argues that this research is worthwhile for practical and theoretical reasons. L3 acquisition studies can inform decisions regarding appropriate timing and procedures to incorporate foreign languages (L3s) in the bilingual curriculum, and they can shed light on important theoretical issues, such as the role of experience in language processing and the role of transfer in the acquisition of grammar.

This article provides a sociocultural perspective of language acquisition that focuses on the relationship between the child and the environment in which language is acquired. This relationship is revealed in children’s monologues and dialogues. By analyzing these types of speech, the article aims to explain what children do as they acquire language and why they do it. The second section of the article reviews three theoretical and methodological perspectives of child language acquisition (cognitivist, pragmatic, and sociocultural theory) and argues for an integration of theories.

Adquisició de primeres i segones llengües: perspectiva històrica i qüestions actuals
    (2003) Comajoan Colomé, Llorenç
This article discusses theoretical approaches to language acquisition and language teaching and focuses on recurring themes in these approaches and how they have developed over time. The first section provides a historical overview of the history of language acquisition. The second section reviews the development of three contemporary issues that originated in past philosophical and linguistic discussions: the differences between first and second language acquisition and the poverty of the stimulus argument, innatism versus empiricism, and the effect of language instruction in second language acquisition. The article concludes with an emphasis on the interdisciplinary nature of language acquisition study.
