dc.description.abstract The early years of the Zapatista rebellion coincided with the emergence in Mexico of an independent video sector, made possible by new recording and editing technologies and inspired by the struggle in Chiapas, with its national and international networks of communication and solidarity. Predating the era of the Web 2.0 and today?s digital social media, video production by and about the Zapatista movement served as an important tool for the visibilization of the conflict as well as the changes taking place within local communities, among others, the transformation of women?s roles and expectations as social subjects. This article explores the first decade of video production by and about Zapatista women, demonstrating its relevance in the construction of historical memory and focusing on the conditions of media production in a period of technological and cultural transition. es
