Esta tesis pretende mostrar el rol integral que la religión desempeñaba en la obtención de los derechos civiles para los afroamericanos y, también en el logro de la paz positiva. Martin Luther King Jr. y la mayoría de los manifestantes del movimiento eran cristianos, poniendo su fe en Dios, para el pleno disfrute de sus derechos humanos. King Jr., anclado en su fe, impulsó el avance de los derechos civiles, mediante la resistencia no violenta. El primer capítulo tiene como finalidad orientar el lector sobre la historia religiosa de los Estados Unidos de América. Resulta importante destacar este periodo porque muchos de los sentimientos religiosos y sociales nacidos en esta época, se presentaron durante la época de la lucha por los derechos civiles. El segundo capítulo pone especial atención en la vida y carrera de Martin Luther King Jr. Se discute su vida familiar, su educación formal, su rol como predicador y su carrera como activista. Hay que resaltar que su espiritualidad se desarrolló en cada etapa de su vida y fue fortalecida a lo largo del movimiento. El tercer capítulo se muestra la correlación entre la resistencia no violenta, la religión y la paz. Se evidencia una vinculación entre los principios de la acción directa no violenta y los principios cristianos. También, se explora el movimiento del nacionalismo negro y sus varios protagonistas. Al final, un ejemplo internacional de la resistencia no violenta se provee con él de Sudáfrica. Es innegable, el paralelismo entre las experiencias de los afroamericanos y las de los sudafricanos. Tanto Mandela como King Jr., eran galardonados con el Premio Nobel de la Paz y los dos querían un país donde pudieran ser tratados como ciudadanos iguales, disfrutando de los mismos derechos humanos que disfrutaban los otros grupos sociales dominantes. Querían igualdad política y no un país racista.

This thesis hopes to demonstrate the integral role which religion played in the acquisition of the civil rights of African Americans and in the attainment of a positive type of peace. Martin Luther King Kr. and the majority of protestors in the movement were Christians who placed their faith in God, for the full enjoyment of their human rights. King Jr., rooted in his faith, propelled the fight for their human rights through the method of non violent resistance. The first chapter seeks to inform the reader about the religious history of the United States of America. It is important to highlight this period because many of the religious and social sentiments of this era, presented themselves again during the period of the civil rights movement. The second chapter places special attention on the life and career of Martin Luther King Jr. His family life, formal education, his role as a preacher and an activist are all discussed. It is important to note that his spirituality developed in each step of his life and was strengthened throughout the movement. The third chapter shows the correlation between non violent resistance, religion and peace. There is a clear link between the principles of non violent resistance and Christian principles. Also, the black nationalist movement and its various protagonists are discussed. Finally, an international example of non violent resistance is given in the case of South Africa. It is undeniable, the parallelism that existed between the experiences of the African Americans and the South Africans. Both Mandela and King Jr. were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and both wanted a country where they could be treated as equals, enjoying the same human rights that other dominant social groups enjoyed. They wanted political equality and not a racist country.
