Las estrellas supergigantes rojas son estrellas frías y muy masivas que se encuentran en la fase previa a las estrellas Wolf-Rayet y a las supernovas. Presentan extensas atmósferas y fuertes vientos estelares que dan lugar a una importante pérdida de masa. El mecanismo que da lugar a estos vientos y a las extensas atmósferas es actualmente tema de debate. Además, la estimación de los parámetros fundamentales de este tipo de estrellas y su posterior localización en el diagrama HR es de gran importancia para calibrar los modelos de evolución estelar, y entender cómo la pérdida de masa afecta a su evolución. En esta tesis hemos estudiado una muestra representativa de estrellas supergigantes rojas (RSGs) con dos objetivos: en primer lugar, estimar sus parámetros fundamentales y situarlas en el diagrama HR; y en segundo lugar, obtener información sobre la estructura de sus extensas atmósferas. También hemos observado una muestra de estrellas gigantes rojas para ver si las estrellas de este tipo, aunque sean menos masivas, también presentan atmósferas extensas. Para alcanzar estos objetivos, hemos realizado observaciones espectro-interferométricas en el infrarrojo cercano (banda K-2.3 micrómetros) usando el instrumento AMBER del Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), situado en el observatorio de Paranal, Chile. Por otro lado, hemos comparado estas observaciones con tres modelos teóricos: un modelo hidrostático (PHOENIX), un modelo convectivo de 3 dimensiones y un modelo pulsante de 1 dimensión. Todas las estrellas observadas en esta tesis presentan fuertes líneas de absorción de CO en sus espectros. Sin embargo, únicamente las estrellas supergigantes rojas y una de las estrellas gigantes rojas (beta Peg) poseen capas moleculares de CO muy extensas, pues estas líneas se observan también en sus visibilidades. Al comparar nuestras observaciones con los modelos PHOENIX, observamos que el espectro de todas nuestras estrellas está bien reproducido por estos modelos, lo que quiere decir que las opacidades están implementadas correctamente en los modelos. Sin embargo, los modelos PHOENIX no predicen las visibilidades de las estrellas supergigantes rojas y de beta Peg. Esto significa que el modelo es demasiado compacto comparándolo con nuestras observaciones. En el caso de las estrellas gigantes rojas y de HD 183589 (inicialmente clasificada como RSGs), los modelos PHOENIX sí reproducen las observaciones, pues estas estrellas no muestran extensas capas moleculares, sus atmósferas son compactas y las capas moleculares de CO están localizadas cerca de la fotosfera. Los parámetros fundamentales los hemos estimado a partir de los diámetros angulares que determinamos en esta tesis, de los flujos bolométricos que estimamos a partir de las magnitudes de las estrellas (obtenidas de la bibliografía), y de las distancias que obtenemos directamente de la bibliografía. Los diámetros angulares los estimamos comparando las visibilidades que medimos en la banda del continuo con la predicción del modelo PHOENIX, ya que esta región no está contaminada por las capas moleculares. Una vez conocidos los parámetros fundamentales podemos situar nuestras estrellas en el diagrama HR. En las estrellas supergigantes rojas, hemos observado correlaciones entre la extensión de sus atmósferas y sus luminosidades y gravedades superficiales. La atmósfera es más extensa cuanto mayor es la luminosidad y menor es la gravedad superficial. También hemos observado que la extensión de la atmósfera de las estrellas supergigantes rojas es similar a la que se observa en las estrellas de tipo Mira, pero en el caso de las estrellas Mira no se observan estas correlaciones. Esto sugiere que el mecanismo físico que da lugar a las extensas capas moleculares debería de ser diferente en cada tipo de estrella. También hemos comparado nuestras observaciones con otros dos tipos de modelos atmosféricos: un modelo convectivo de 3 dimensiones y un modelo de pulsaciones auto-excitadas de 1 dimensión con parámetros típicos de estrellas supergigantes rojas. Ambos modelos muestran atmósferas compactas, similares a las obtenidas con los modelos PHOENIX. Por lo tanto, ni la convección ni las pulsaciones pueden explicar nuestros datos. En resumen, con esta tesis hemos aumentado significativamente la muestra de observaciones de las atmósferas de estrellas supergigantes rojas, pues antes de este trabajo, la extensión de la atmósfera de este tipo de estrellas solo se había estudiado en unas pocas fuentes. Gracias al aumento de la muestra, hemos podido comenzar un estudio estadístico de sus propiedades, como por ejemplo, la relación entre la extensión de la atmósfera y la luminosidad. Por otro lado, al comparar nuestras observaciones con las predicciones de diferentes modelos teóricos, hemos encontrado que ninguno de los modelos atmosféricos actuales son capaces de explicar nuestras observaciones interferométricas.

Red supergiant stars are cool and massive stars that evolve toward Wolf-Rayet stars and supernovae. They have extended atmospheres and strong stellar winds, which lead to significant mass loss. Currently, the mechanisms that explain the large observed atmospheric extensions are open to debate. On the other hand, the estimation of the fundamental parameters of these stars and their location in the HR diagram are very important for calibrating the evolutionary models and understanding how the mass loss affects their evolution. In this thesis, we study a representative sample of red supergiant stars (RSGs) with two main goals: firstly, we estimate the fundamental parameters of these stars and we locate them in the HR diagram; and secondly, we study the structure of their atmospheres. We have also observed a sample of red giant stars to see if these less massive and less evolved stars have extended atmospheres too. To achieve these objectives, we have carried out spectro-interferometric observations in near-infrared wavelength with the AMBER instrument of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), located at the Paranal Observatory in Chile. Furthermore, we have compared these observations with three theoretical models: a hydrostatic model (PHOENIX), a 3-D convective model, and a 1-D pulsation model. The red giant and supergiant stars observed in this thesis show strong CO lines in their spectra. However, only the red supergiants and one of the red giants (beta Peg) show their CO molecular layers at large extensions as inferred from their visibilities. When we compare our observations with the PHOENIX models, we observe that the spectra of all our stars are well reproduced by them, therefore, these models have the molecular opacities well implemented. However, the observed visibility data of the red supergiants and beta Peg are not predicted by the PHOENIX models. This indicates that the modeled atmospheres are too compact compared to our observed atmospheres. In the case of the other red giants and of HD 183589 (initially classified as RSG star), the visibility curves do not show extended molecular layers. These sources have a compact atmospheric structure and the CO layers are located close to the continuum-forming layers. We estimate the fundamental parameters of our stars using the angular diameters, the bolometric fluxes, and the distances. We estimate the angular diameters from the observations presented in this thesis, while the bolometric fluxes are estimated using the magnitudes of the stars (obtained from the literature) and the distances are obtained from the literature. We can estimate reliable angular diameters for our stars comparing the observed continuum to the continuum modeled by PHOENIX, because the observed continuum appears to be largely free of contamination by molecular layers. Once we know the fundamental parameters, we can locate our stars in the HR diagram. We also observe correlations between the atmospheric extension of our RSGs and their luminosity and surface gravity. The correlations indicate an increasing atmospheric extension with increasing luminosity and with decreasing surface gravity. We also notice that RSGs and Mira type stars show similar atmospheric extensions. However, in the case of Mira stars, we do not observe these correlations, thus suggesting that different processes may be responsible for extending the atmospheres in RSG and Mira stars. We also compared our observations with two other atmospheric models: a 3-D convection model, and a 1-D pulsation model with typical parameters of RSGs. Both models show compact atmospheres, comparable to those of the PHOENIX models. Thus, neither convection nor pulsation are able to explain the results of our observations. In summary, with this thesis we have increased significantly the sample of observed RSG atmospheres, since before our work, the extension of RSG atmospheres had only been studied for a few sources. This enlargement of the sample has made it possible to start studying statistical properties of RSGs, namely, the relationship between extension of their atmospheres and their luminosity. We have compared our observations with the predictions of different theoretical models and we have found that none of the current models can explain our interferometric observations.
