El trabajo desarrollado en la tesis doctoral que lleva por título "Theoretical study of the molecular bases that control photochemical processes with biological and nanotechnological interest" se enmarca en las líneas de investigación del grupo QCEXVAL (Quantum Chemistry of the Excited State University of Valencia), que nació en el seno del departamento de Química Física de la Universitat de València en 1993. Se han abordado temas de interés metodológico, biológico y nanotecnológico. La primera parte de la tesis trata el estudio del método químico-cuántico RASPT2 (Multiconfigurational second-order Perturbation Theory Restricted Active Space) donde se ha calibrado esta metolodogía para sistemas orgánicos e inorgánicos en el cálculo de energías de excitación comparando su precisión con el método multiconfiguracional bien establecido CASPT2. También se han diseñado las estrategias más apropiadas en cuanto a precisión y coste computacional en la tarea de la selección del espacio activo, el tratamiendo de la mezcla valencia-Rydberg presente en moléculas orgánicas de pequeño tamaño y el efecto de la segunda capa correlacionada 4d en los metales de transición de la primera fila. Además esta metodología presenta, como CASPT2, su extensión Multistate (MS) que es de gran utilidad en la solución del problema de la mezcla valencia-Rydberg. Por otra parte, MS-RASPT2 también se puede utilizar en la obtención de superficies de energía potencial, de hecho, se han calculado las curvas de energía potencial para la molécula de eteno en función de la distancia carbono-carbono con el fin de parametrizar el Hamiltoniano extendido de Hubbard. La parametrización del modelo de Hubbard constituye el segundo trabajo desarrollado en la presente tesis. El Hamiltoniano extendido de Hubbard tiene la particularidad de ser analíticamente resoluble para un sistema de dos sitios y dos electrones, como el eteno. Su solución nos aporta información de las energías de los estados más bajos energéticamente, el estado fundamental, y los estados excitados triplete y singlete, que están expresadas en función de los parámetros del modelo de Hubbard. Las curvas de energía potencial calculadas para el eteno permiten obtener los valores de estos parámetros que se ajustan a funciones polinómicas dependientes de la distancia carbono-carbono. El trabajo tiene por objeto la transferencia de esta parametrización a otros hidrocarburos, en particular, butadieno, hexatrieno y benceno, para estimar su estructura molecular y sus energías de excitación. La segunda parte de la tesis se centra en el estudio fotofísico y fotoquímico de compuestos de boro, que tienen aplicaciones en nanotecnología, y los pares de bases de ADN, de gran interés biológico. A principios de los años 60, Hawthorne y sus colaboradores sintetizaron los isómeros anti y sin del hidruro de boro octadecaborano(22). Experimentalmente se observó una diferente fotofísica en ambos compuestos, mientras el isómero anti presenta señal de fluorescencia, no se registra espectro de emisión en el isómero sin. En este trabajo se han medido, además, los rendimientos cuánticos y los tiempos de vida media de los estados excitados involucrados en los procesos de desactivación energética. Y, por primera vez, se aporta una explicación teórica (a nivel CASPT2) de la diferente fotofísica de ambos isómeros, siendo los cambios conformacionales en las regiones de cruce entre superficies de energía potencial (intersecciones cónicas) claves en su comprensión. Y para finalizar, se han estudiado los procesos de doble transferencia de protón/hidrógeno en los pares de bases de ADN cuando son fotoexcitados utilizando el protocolo CASPT2//CASSCF. Per-Olov Löwdin enunció a principios de los años 60 que la doble transferencia de protón era la causa de la formación de mutaciones espontáneas en el material genético. Inicialmente se abordaron estudios de doble transferencia de protón en el estado fundamental. En los años 90 se incrementó el interés en la fotoexcitación de los pares de bases de ADN y a principios del siglo XXI se explicó teóricamente la fotoestabilidad de las bases. La discusión de estos fenómenos se centraba en dilucidar si la doble transferencia de protón era un proceso concertado o por pasos. Este trabajo trata precisamente ambos caminos de reacción para establecer que la doble transferencia de protón/hidrógeno es un proceso que ocurre por pasos. Y no sólo respalda los anteriores estudios sobre fotoestabilidad sino que también explica la tautomerización de los pares de bases de ADN. La investigación se ha completado para el par de bases Guanina-Citosina teniendo en cuenta los efectos del medio utilizando metodología híbrida QM/MM y también se ha descrito de una forma preliminar el comportamiento dinámico de este mismo sistema haciendo uso de la dinámica no-adiabática de salto de superficie desarrollada por Tully.

The work presented in the PhD thesis named “Theoretical study of the molecular bases that control photochemical processes with biological and nanotechnological interest” is framed among the research lines of the QCEXVAL group (Quantum Chemistry of the Excited State University of Valencia), which was founded in the Physical Chemistry department of the University of Valencia in 1993. Several studies focused on theory development and modelling systems of biological and nanotechnological interest have been carried out. The first part of the thesis deals with the calibration of the quantum-chemical method RASPT2 (Multiconfigurational second-order Perturbation Theory Restricted Active Space). For this purpose, computations of excitation energies of organic and inorganic systems have been compared with the well-established multiconfigurational method CASPT2. The most appropriate strategies for the selection of the active space, the treatment of the valence-Rydberg mixing common in small organic molecules, and the effect of the second correlating d-shell 4d in the first-row transition metals have been designed in terms of accuracy and computational cost. Furthermore, the multistate (MS) treatment can be also applied to the RASPT2, as in CASPT2, and it is found to be useful to solve the valence-Rydberg mixing problem. On the other hand, MS-RASPT2 can be used in the computation of potential energy surfaces. Indeed, the potential energy curves for ethene as a function of the carbon-carbon distance have been computed in order to parameterize the extended Hubbard Hamiltonian. The parameterization of the Hubbard model is the second work carried out in the thesis. The extended Hubbard Hamiltonian has an analytical solution for a two-site two-electron system like ethene. The solution gives the energies of the three lowest-energy states, the ground state, the triplet, and singlet excited states, which are expressed as a function of the parameters of the Hubbard model. The potential energy curves computed for ethene allow obtaining the value of the parameters which are fitted to polynomial functions dependent on the carbon-carbon distance. The most remarkable aim of the study is the transference of the parameterization to other hydrocarbons, in particular, butadiene, hexatriene, and benzene, to estimate their molecular structure and excitation energies. The second part of the thesis includes the photophysical and photochemical studies of boron compounds, which have nanotechnological applications, and the DNA base pairs, with great biological interest. At the beginning of the sixties, Hawthorne and co-workers synthesized the anti and syn isomers of the boron hydride octadecaborane(22). Different photophysical behavior was observed experimentally, whereas the anti isomer presents fluorescence, no emission spectrum was recorded in the syn isomer. In this study, the quantum yields and the lifetimes of the excited states involved in the energy deactivation processes have also been measured. Furthermore, for the first time, a theoretical explanation (at the CASPT2 level) of the distinct photophysics of both isomers is given, where the conformational changes in the crossing regions of the potential energy surfaces (conical intersections) are the key for its understanding. Finally, the excited-state doble proton/hydrogen transfer processes in the DNA base pairs have been studied by using the CASPT2//CASSCF protocol. At the beginning of the sixties, Per-Olov Löwdin stated that double proton transfer processes were the cause of the formation of spontaneous mutations in the genetic material. The initial studies dealt with the double proton transfer in the ground state. In the nineties, the interest in the photoexcitation of the DNA base pairs increased and at the beginning of the twenty-first century, the photostability of the DNA base pairs was explained theoretically. An active area of debate was if the double proton/hydrogen transfer was a concerted or stepwise process. The present work investigates both reaction paths concluding that the double proton/hydrogen transfer is a stepwise process. The study gives also support to earlier studies on photostability and it explains the tautomerism of the DNA base pair. The research has been completed for the Guanine-Cytosine base pair taking into account the environmental effects by using the hybrid methodology QM/MM and a preliminary dynamics study of the same system has also been carried out through the nonadiabatic surface-hopping dynamics developed by Tully.
