RESUMEN El objetivo de esta tesis es analizar la obra del artista suizo contemporáneo H.R Giger. Conocido por su trabajo en la película Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979), su obra ha pasado desapercibida para la historiografía y el mundo académico. Pero sin embargo se ha erigido en uno de los artistas más influyentes en las últimas décadas. Se trata de un creador polifacético, dibujante, pintor, escultor, diseñador, cuya obra abarca más de 40 años. Giger ha desarrollado un estilo propio e inconfundible, acuñado por él mismo como biomecánico, en el que sintetiza formas de origen natural (biológico) y artificial (mecánico). Entre los temas más significativos que ha desarrollado, destacan la conexión nacimiento-vida-muerte, la enfermedad, la superpoblación, la figura del monstruo y la magia. Su arte se relaciona con el simbolismo y con el surrealismo, de hecho es un gran admirador de Dalí. El papel de Giger en la cultura contemporánea ha sido notable, puesto que ha influido en diferentes manifestaciones tales como el arte fantástico, el cine de terror y de ciencia ficción, el tatuaje, el cómic y el diseño gráfico. Algunas corrientes de vanguardia actuales lo consideran un artista de culto y lo valoran como uno de los artífices de la emergente estética de lo siniestro, del estilo dark y de la aparición de un nuevo gótico fin de siglo. Pero quizá más interesante aún es el carácter visionario de Giger pues ya desde sus inicios artísticos planteaba la problemática del cyborg y sus implicaciones médicas y filosóficas. Además se le considera como iniciador de corrientes y sensibilidades posmodernas como la Nueva Carne (todo un género que desarrolla la relación tecnocientífica con el cuerpo humano, la monstruosidad y el sadomasoquismo) y es admirado por los escritores del cyberpunk. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the work of the Swiss contemporary artist H.R Giger. Known by his contribution in the movie Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979), his work has passed unnoticed for the historiography and the academic world. But nevertheless it has been raised as one of the most influential artists in the last decades. He is a versatile creator, draftsman, painter, sculptor, designer, whose oeuvre includes more than 40 years. Giger has developed a personal and unmistakable style coined by him itself as biomechanics, a concept that plays with the fusion of forms of natural (biological) and artificial (mechanical) origin. Among the most significant topics that he has developed, they emphasize the connection birth-life-death, disease, overpopulation, the figure of the monster and the magic. His art relates to the symbolism and with the surrealism, in fact he is a great admirer of Dalí. Giger's role in the contemporary culture has been notable, since he has influenced such different manifestations as fantastic art, horror and science fiction cinema, tattoo art, comic books and graphical design. Some avantgarde currents consider him a cult artist and value it as one of the makers of the emergent dark aesthetics, the appearance of a new Gothic style at the end of the century. But probably more interesting still, it is Giger's visionary character since already from his artistic beginnings he was raising the problematics of the cyborg and his medical and philosophical implications. Besides he is considered to be an initiator of currents and postmodern sensibilities as the New Flesh (a whole genre that develops the relation technique with the human body, the monstrosity and sadomasochism) and is admired by the writers of the cyberpunk.
