Doctor in Geography (July 1999), his dissertation presented the results of a research on the Evaluation of Rural Development Policies in one of the most lagging rural areas of Spain (the Meridional Iberic System). The LEADER and PRODER programs, among other, were in-deep analysed with a methodology combining qualitative and quantitative methods. In 2001 he was awarded with the Extraordinary Thesis Award, a competitive award of the University of Valencia to the best dissertation. From 1994 he has been involved in several competitive research projects of different EU Framework Programs. All these projects relate to key territorial development issues (development policies, public-private partnerships for development, periferality and new factors for territorial development, knowledge and local development, etc.). He has participated in several official evaluations of rural development policies by the EU. He is responsible for several post-graduate studies at the University of Valencia (Master in Management and Promotion of Local Development, Masters in applied GIS, Master on the territorial vision of development). He is Professor of Regional Geography and Director of the Institute for Local Development of the University of Valencia (www.iidl-valencia.es). He leads the research group Local Sustainability (LOCSUS – www.locsus.com). His last projects are an ESPON Rural Development Project on future strategies for European typologies of rural areas, and two LLP Projects on Auditing the Use of Urban Public Spaces, and defining the professional profile of the European Rural Animator. Finally, he has invited to participate in OECD projects, for instance, the RURBAN Project on building partnerships between rural and urban areas.
