En este artículo se analiza la noción jurídica de potestad con la pretensión de establecer su estructura y de delimitar su significado y extensión. El análisis de las potestades se construye fundamentalmente depurando cualquier elemento deóntico de su estructura y presuponiendo que son sólo normas de competencia las que las constituyen. Potestad es, por tanto, una norma que establece que un acto de un sujeto tiene como resultado un cambio jurídico, sin entrar en consideraciones deónticas referidas a su ejercicio. Para evitar que la noción tenga un alcance desmesurado, en primer lugar, se acota su extensión limitándola estrictamente a cambios de corte jurídico y no a intervenciones físicas o materiales sobre algún objeto o sujeto y, en segundo lugar, se refiere el objeto de la potestad sólo a aquellos actos que provocan un cambio jurídico como resultado y no como mera consecuencia.   Abstract This article examines the legal notion of power with the aim of establishing its structure and defining its extent. The analysis of powers is built refining any deontic element in its structure and therefore assuming that norms of competence are the only type of rules which constitute them. Therefore a power is a rule which establishes that an act of an individual results in a legal change, without considering any deontical aspect regarding to its exercise. To prevent the concept has enormous scope it is bounded strictly, firstly, limiting its size to legal changes but not physical or material affecting any object or subject ones and, secondly, the object of the power is referred only to those acts that cause legal changes as their result and not merely as a consequence.
