RESUMEN When shall we three meet again? es una de las preguntas que se plantean las hechiceras al comienzo de la obra shakesperiana de Macbeth. Meditan sobre un nuevo re-encuentro al que todas ellas asistan en compañía, a su vez, del protagonista. Sin embargo, desde sus primeros momentos de vida en la producción dramática londinense de comienzos del siglo XVII, no sabían, quizás ni el propio Shakespeare lo sabía, que se reencontrarían hasta la infinidad, en los escenarios más diferentes y variopintos del mundo desde la creación de esta obra hasta la actualidad. A partir de reflexiones de este tipo, el objetivo de la tesis es indagar los procesos de metamorfosis que experimenta un conjunto de datos históricos sobre rey escocés Macbeth en el campo de la producción dramática británica, en concreto, en ocho instantes específicos de la historia del teatro inglés. Y lo hace a través de ocho reescrituras que incluyen elementos comunes reconocibles en las crónicas iniciales junto a otros de características ajenas que dependen de la particular aclimatación de cada una de ellas a cada momento social. En primer lugar, se analizan las aventuras y desventuras de este personaje legendario en la obra shakesperiana de Macbeth junto a las fuentes i situaciones sociopolíticas que originaron la aparición de esta tragedia. Se constata la multiplicidad referencial y semántica de la obra jacobina y su capacidad virtual de reproducirse en otras producciones. En segundo lugar, asistimos al rediseño de esta ficción por parte de otros dramaturgos a través de los siglos, desde la época de la Restauración hasta finales del siglo XX: Sir William Davenant, Robert Bell, Francis Talfourd, George Bernard Shaw, Charles Marowitz, Welcome Msomi y Tom Stoppard. Finalmente, presenciamos cómo cada nueva acomodación a un período distinto y a sus receptores ha motivado, por una parte, ideas inéditas relacionadas con la situación contemporánea que rodea a cada nueva re-lectura, por otra parte, ideas inéditas relacionadas con el original shakesperiano, que, observado desde perspectivas distantes, nos sumerge en contenidos inexplorados con anterioridad. Un proceso en el que el mito se retroalimenta: sirve para nuevas creaciones, custodia su riqueza de significados y, en último lugar, acrecienta su credibilidad. __________________________________________________________________________________________________

When shall we three meet again? is a question the weird sisters usually draw attention to when the Shakespearean play of Macbeth is performed. When they first uttered those words in the 17th century, however, they did not know about their never-ending meetings on the stage of a vast number of theatres since the creation of this tragedy to the present time. These kind of thoughts conduct the project of this thesis: the metamorphosis processes which several historical data about the Scottish king Macbeth have gone through in the field of the British drama. In particular, in eight moments of the history of British theatre. Firstly, we observe the special quest this Jacobean character is involved in. We study the historical sources and political influence upon Shakespeares play, its semantic and referential multiplicity and its virtual possibilities of procreation in other productions. Secondly, we view the reshaping of this fiction in other dramatic pieces and how it has been transformed through diverse styles along the centuries, from the Restoration to our time. We study the plays related to Macbeth of Sir William Davenant, Robert Bell, Francis Talfourd, George Bernard Shaw, Charles Marowitz, Welcom Msomi and Tom Stoppard. Finally, we witness how each new rewriting has accommodated itself to a different period, to its audience, to its instant. How it has produced newborn ideas related, on the one hand, to the contemporary situation involving each fresh interpretation of the story. On the other hand, to the Shakespearean original itself, which, being observed from distant viewpoints, lets us know contents unexplored previously.
